Need to get rid of Caleb next year

It all went down hill in the Baltimore game after he kicked the ball out of bounds following a big time scoring drive. Completely changed momentum of that game and he went on to produce a pathetic percentage since then.

How so? He's missed two kicks from the 30-39 yard range. Those should be gimme's. Two kicks from the 40-49 yard range and he's 3-7 from 50+. Give him the two 30-39 yard FGs he missed and one of the 40-49 yarders and his percentage goes up to 84.8 which is much more respectable...but about the same percentage that Carp had when we cut him.

League average from 50+ is 62.6% by the way....Sturgis is at 42.9% from 50+
I can't argue with the numbers.

I just think asking your rookie kicker to hit from 50+ so many times, and too often solely relying on him to bail out an offense that struggles to score points is a colossal mistake.

His confidence is fragile. Yet our coaching staff is acting as if we have Adam Vinatieri back there.

Sturgis is only bound to get better -- much better. You deal with the rookie pains to eventually get to that (cheap) above average level of performance. Cutting him after this season would be the equivalent to breaking up with your girlfriend her first year into yoga/working out. Regrettable.

He just needs tutoring from Dave Wannstedt,No in all seriousness I like the kid, give him some time.

Our coaching staff has set the kid up for failure, many many times this season.
He'll be ok if only we'd put him in better situations to succeed.

All this kid is asked to do is kick. Nothing more. What better situation do you think he needs? Warm the bench real good?
The kid has been a disaster. He needs some competition. Veteran competition. Maybe we let him and Carp battle it out again next off season.
BTW. I bet carp would have nailed that kick yesterday!

He's young, still learning. Has a great leg, just needs to fine tune the accuracy. Not his fault he missed the kick yesterday.

Who's fault is it? Is it not his job to kick field goals? Just because he is young is no excuse. I guess Philbin should kick the 50+ and let the kid handle all the stuff inside the 30.
Silly. This is the NFL. Give me a break!

Well if his confidence is fragile maybe we should send him out to Jonathan Martin's house so he can toughen up. How did the Pats find out that Adam Vinateri was as good as he was in the clutch unless they let him kick those kicks? Something like that doesn't magically appear...you have to earn it and Sturgis isn't earning it right now. Graham Gano of the Panthers is 6-6 from 50+, Matt Prater kicked a 64-yard FG yesterday. How many kickers have missed 50+ yard kicks against us? I can't think of one.

Sturgis doesn't get a free pass cause he's a rookie. He was a 5th round pick which is plenty high for a kicker. Compare his season with other kickers in their rookie season...Justin Tucker last year...90.9% accurate 4/4 on 50+ average distance of kick 38.7 yards, Greg Zuerlein last year...74.2% accurate 7/13 on 50+ average distance of kick 42.3 yards (8 misses all year and 6 of them from 50+), Alex Henery two years ago 88.9% accurate 1/2 on 50+ average distance of kick 32.0 yards. Caleb Sturgis...75.8% accurate 3/7 on 50+ average distance of kick 37.6 yards.

Never had expectations for the lil' squirt to begin with. He's a Gator. Slightly mediocre at best.

Wasn't Ireland a kicker in college? He can't even draft a position he's familiar with. LOL. How many kickers get drafted? I bet we could have got this kid as an undesired player or in the 7th round. 5th seems high unless this kid was automatic in college the likes of which hadn't been seen since Janikowski. We could have a veteran kicker without having blown a draft pick. Yes, a lot of 50+ Yarders but he doesn't hit them any more - not counting yesterday as that was unfair. He probably will mature into a good kicker. I just don't understand using a 5th round pick on a kicker.

Meh... THe Majority of his misses are from 50+ And has a really strong leg. Hopefully he will get better with his deep accuracy next year. He started off really good this season. And usually does a good job kicking touchbacks.

I agree with whoever said sign an undrafted rookie for comp. Give him another year and see what he can do.

That side of Heinz Field is impossible to kick too. 1/9 from 50 yards. Caleb had no chance.

Through the first part of the season people thought we had the next Vinatieri on our hands. This guy can do it. He is elite. He's a Gator.

Our coaching staff would never set up a player for failure. If that player screws up, it's on him because our coaching staff is the best ever.
