New NFL Domestic Violence Policy

It would have to be based on convictions. No way charge based would hold up in a court of law.

This will lead to a ton of settlements without a court verdict. This sets up players to also become blackmail targets. I can't see the players union accepting those penalties.

This wreaks of an opening salvo in the latest Owners vs. Players war.

It would ultimately be a contractual matter, i.e. whether the league can impose this new form of discipline unilaterally under the CBA. I don't know one way or the other. But even if the union had to agree, do they want to be accused of being soft on domestic violence, which will happen even if there are legitimate concerns about the details of the policy.

Honestly, they should apply this same rule to anyone involved in any kind of violent crime, not just domestic abuse.

The 6 game ban is an extension of the NFL Personal Conduct Policy and punishes people for assault, battery, and basically any kind of violence involving a weapon....its not just domestic abuse.

This over the top and has no chance to stand.

This will not stand, ya know? This aggression will not stand, man.

I have no problem with a rule saying all assaults mean a suspension. I just don't like it protecting only women (or men in Michael Sams case) who are a domestic relationship and not protecting those who are not.

Jeez people, read the dam policy and letter released by Goodell before calling it BS. Its a very fair policy imo, and no you don't just get a lifetime ban if your woman says you hit her. That's just crazy.

This seems like it opens up potential extortion of players from gold diggers

Article on new proposal:

The NFL is getting it right this time, and sweeping change will likely soon be coming to the league's policy concerning domestic violence and sexual assault.

In one of the more stunning moves of Commissioner Roger Goodell's tenure, he outlined a proposal that calls for a player who commits a domestic violence act to be suspended six games for first offense, with a lifetime ban for the second.

All indications are that these policies could be enacted soon, unless the union puts up a huge fight. The union would face a public-perception problem if it did, as it would appear to be trying to stop measures taken to cease domestic violence and sexual assault.

"Goodell announced that violations of the Personal Conduct Policy regarding assault, battery, domestic violence or sexual assault that involve physical force "will be subject to a suspension without pay of six games for a first offense." A second offense will result in banishment from the NFL for at least one year. An individual can petition for reinstatement after one year, but "there will be no presumption or assurance that the petition will be granted."

See this is great and I'm onboard 100%. Get in a bar fight with anybody, male or female, and you're suspended.

Player's union response:

“We were informed today of the NFL’s decision to increase penalties on domestic violence offenders under the Personal Conduct Policy for all NFL employees. As we do in all disciplinary matters, if we believe that players’ due process rights are infringed upon during the course of discipline, we will assert and defend our members’ rights,” the statement reads.

Its just hard to police certain things. So if I get charged but charges get dropped how can that be the same

There will also be some isolated cases where a wife gets the crap beat out of her but won't say anything because she knows that's where the family money comes from and won't want to tarnish the golden goose.

I can't and won't defend domestic abusers, but a lifetime ban seems a bit excessive.

Men have a right to make a living. As much as I despise Michael Vick, he did his time, was punished by a court of law, and deserved the chance to support himself and his family in his chosen profession. If Ray Rice gets into another fight with his wife...

Don't forget these guys also go to college to get a degree so they should all have fall back plans. But if they don't then it's on them and no one's fault but their own. They would lose any other normal job if they got locked up so what's the diffrrence?

Most jobs never know if an employee got arrested for domestic violence unless it results in prison time, which it rarely does. If Ray Rice worked at Wal-Mart his employer would have never learned about what happened.

Good. You can't tell me a man who smokes green now and again is a worse person than someone who hits women.
