NEWS: Dolphins Sign Tailback Chatman

we picked him up off waivers to keep him from teams that need rb's - untill we work a trade we will corner the market!

SD also has Darren Sproles...just as Saban said....when things are close, you go with the younger guys (meaning cheaper also)

Dang I guess so but Chatman's not that old! He's going to be what 26 years old in a couple of weeks, and he's going into his 3rd year...was an undrafted free agent. Maybe they felt the offensive line created most of his production? I know I did not feel that way. I do know they REALLY like the potential of Michael Turner, the guy they drafted in the 5th round in 2004. He's got size at 5'10" and 237 pounds and he's FAST as all heck, and he's really showed them something this preseason. Also I guess you know they like Darren Sproles everyone thinks he's like the next Eric Metcalf and you can feel how you want about that.

Personally if I'm A.J. Smith I don't get rid of Chatman that easy. I make a space for him. Either let Turner showcase his wares and then trade him somewhere, with Chatman and Sproles left to back up L.T., or I'd continue to showcase Chatman until someone trades for him and based on last year's production I would certainly think some team might have stepped up to the plate.

WHAT A MOVE FOR MIAMI THOUGH. I mean, I know it probably won't have TOO much of an impact on us but this is a guy that really is quite a game player.

I can see you're point. although I think it'll be the TE's/FB staying in almost exclusively with 2wr or 1WR/1TE going out for most downs other than long yardage. It's possible.....not as likely as I don't think they'll totally change what they want to do this late in the game....but possible.

As for Thompson....I think he's a goner. Strangely, i think that if Boston wasn't signed to such a low contract...he'd be gone also. still might?

Think about it like this, how much did we pass vs. run in the preseason??? I don't know the stats, but after watching the games I would say almost 2 to 1 in favor of the pass. If saban is anything like belichek and won't tip his hand, seeing a pass heavy promoted "verticle offense" is a great ruse for the talent we have. Huge o-linmen, great TE. A very quality FB, Large WR who can block (boston and Thompson) and now an unbeleivable crew at RB (now officially the best I have ever seen I beleive).

I wouldn't be surprised to see the team that Jimmy Johnson only wished he had. An unbeleivable powerfull smashmouth football type running game, offset by highly efficient short passes (screens flats and short slants). Then once teams start putting 9 defenders in the box here comes the end arounds, PA Bombs to chambers and Boston, and pump fakes on hitch n'go routes.

While we won't be what I beleive a lot on this sight were hoping we would be, I think we will be a lot better than our QB's will allow.

This Offense is shaping up very nicely in my opinion....:D

I think this means we might be trading Sammy Morris, unfortunately. He's too skilled of a back to just pick up for ****s and giggles.

FYI...Chatman also lead the Chargers in Special Teams tackles last season.

So, he in essence, replaces Ayanbadejo as well. This is a very solid pickup. Adds depth everywhere, offense, special teams...

NO! Take it back! Gordon and Minor fine, Morris? I would like to keep. Really, Morris has more value than the other two, but I think he has more value to us than a alte round pick. Think about this though, after week 5, our running back corps will be as follows:

Ricky Williams
Ronnie Brown
Sammy Morris
Jesse Chatman

All four of those guys can put a clubbering on a defender and most likely will.

Now thats dangerous, whew

Living in Las Vegas, I see tons of Chargers games plus they show the Chargers weekly highlight show. About a month ago I was surprised when Chatman showed up on the waiver wire. My buddy from Las Vegas who works with me is a huge Chargers fan. He emailed me and said the coaching staff was down on Chatman for failing to attend the offseason conditioning program. Apparently he was far above his prescribed weight then failed a physical, so the team released him. I had no idea he was still available. If his weight is down this is an excellent value pickup. Chatman can he a real bull going straight ahead.

I fully expect that the asking price for Morris would be much higher than for Gordon. If this is happening, I would expect no less than a 5th for Morris and probably a 4th.

Not that this has to do with what you wrote, but I have to wonder how much of a role Houck played in this choice. He should be the most familiar person on the team with Chatman.

Chatman was released earlier this summer bc of he reported to camp in the upper 260 range after limiting his participation in the OTAs. There's no doubt this has been in the works for weeks, basically giving him a month to get in shape and then come in. Bc if he came in to S Fla at his previous condition during double days he would have never survived. Great foresight by this organization on this move. This is a guy who might tote it 8-10 times agianst Denver supplementing Ronnie. Very quietly Sammy Morris was used quite often at FB against TB and Atl, as that might be his primary role this year as a back.

I'm still waiting on those who will complain that we shouldn't have signed him because we're loaded at RB.

Ragone had 6 completions for 172 yards against Tampa

LOL. I know. I was at the game. I was jawing with Rags a bit too talkin him up and sayin I would love to have him in Miami (my seats were REAL close to the sideline, I got them through work).

I was also jawing with Andre Johnson kept calling him Andre 1500 (get it? Andre 3000 vs. Andre 1500...I told him it was cuz he's gonna catch for 1500 yards) and also Phillip Buchanon. They are my U boys, mah Canes baby.

And as for Sammy Morris, now that we have Jesse Chatman I would trade Sammy Morris to the Eagles in a SECOND. The dude is just never going to have a complete game as a full time running back, and he's not fast enough to be a change of pace back. He's got durability issues, fumble issues, speed issues. I like him, he's one of those guys that gives you maximum effort on every play and you love that, but he's just not talented enough. I've watched Chatman and boy he IS talented let me tell you. With Chatman on board, honestly I'm like "sammy who?"

Heck with Chatman here I'd trade Morris AND Gordon, keep Ricky, Ronnie, Jesse, and Travis at RB with Heath Evans at FB.

Dang dude, thanks for the heads up I really didn't know what the story was. So Jesse had some baggage that's good to hear actually because if you can't figure out what the baggage was that made him available that means it could sneak up on you.

So I guess the question is, what is Jesse's weight at now. He really could be a big contributor for us.

one site I saw had him at 256

rotoworld has him as 5'8" 247...25 yrs old.

I've seen 247, and fins2923 says 260 pounds when he reported to the chargers and was subsequently cut. If the Phins are signing Chatman, I'd be willing to bet he is not close to 260 anymore. I'm guessing they've had him on the line a while cutting his weight with a gentleman's agreement that we'd roster him over Gordon if he gets in proper shape.

I wish we could tell what he weighs now...
