NFL and DirecTV agree to new 8 year deal for Sunday Ticket

Hence why I said they will morph into internet delivery only (for the wired connections). Cable sucks as a content distributor. It is their local monopolies that keeps them in business. If I want cable, I have no other option but comcast. I can't get a satelite reception where I live. God I hate this DTV deal. I'm willing to spend the money but DTV still blocks me. I hate them more than you can imagine.

In a way I don't get this continued deal with Direct TV. It seems to me that the NFL would want as many eyes on the game as possible and only offering this to one provider, that is a lot less eyes.

I realize that $1.5 billion is a lot, but I would at least think that amount or more could be generated were to offered it for to all providers. Rather than make it exclusive, why not sale for say $500 million to any provider that ones it?

What's insane now is that on DTV you have to pay EXTRA and get NFL Sunday Ticket MAX or something to get RedZone! We pay for Sunday Ticket and actively cannot get RedZone without paying another $100. Insanity.

If you have Ticket, you really don't need RZ. For me, I want to see all Fins games. During commercials...I'm totally fine just going to the direct channel of any AFC East games. Maybe it's just me, but if Miami isn't playing, I like to see how the Pats, Jets, Bills are doing...no matter who they're playing. I'd rather watch those games than RZ showing the Browns/Jags for example.

Call me crazy. But has having the Redzone sort of made the Directv NFL ticket package almost useless...

Not quite. I only watch Dolphins games and flip to the other ones only during commercials or when the Dolphins game is over. It would piss me off if Redzone channel started showing Dolphins then flashed to a different game just as I was getting into it.

I also find myself watching AFC East games when the Phins are not on. Either that or teams with an elite QB such as Manning or Rodgers.

This really, REALLY sucks. I wanted Google to buy the rights so bad.

My condo association doesn't allow dishes. I have to go to the bar every Sunday to watch the Dolphins.

Anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: I live in Michigan.

I agree with that until the end of the season when S.D. or Tenn may impact Miami's wildcard chances

You should try to become president of the association and get a vote to change the rule. Also, watching at a bar every week isn't bad. You can't rewind or hear the game, but at least you get away from the house and have food available. But you take a risk if you drink and drive. That was my decider for getting the ticket. Plus I enjoy watching with my wife whose slowly becoming a Dolphin backer.

I hate going to a bar because you can't hear the game.

Well after listening to Dan Dierdorf 3 hour long Brady/Belichek slob fest, it's probably a good thing. Thank god he's retired. That was awful listening to.

Last year was the first year ever the cable industry had a net negative growth rate in customers. It's already begun. I can't wait until these monopolies go the way of the horse and buggy.

While I agree on the monopoly aspect of your post, there are people like me that cannot even get cable.
We have to use satellite if we want TV. We cannot rely on an internet connection as its to slow to use for anything other than email and some choppy YouTube.
The last thing I would want is for the NFL to partner with a internet provider unless there were other options as well.
We are dying here waiting for Charter Cable to come into our area. Like you guys are already ready to see them leave the landscape entirely.
We could up our speeds considerably with cable vs DSL.
I cannot even use my DirectV Genie because the Internet is so slow.

Thats not true.
Sunday Ticket used to be $300 a season including Red Zone. There were no other packages available. To accommodate more customers willing to spend less, they offered the basic package of games for $199. This happened season before last.
So what you meant to say is, "I am paying the new price, but I want red Zone and mobile support included" for the old price.
Drop Red Zone and save $100. Or pay the $100 for it. Nothing has actually change except we can now get the basic package for $199.

Red Zone is great when the Dolphins aren't playing, but I hate it when they are.

I watched the KC game on Red Zone on a plane and they kept cutting away from the Dolphins game while the Phins or the Chiefs were in the red zone to show the Denver game when they were at midfield. I understand we don't have Peyton Manning but I'm used to watching the whole game and RZC just doesn't stack up to having the ticket when you want to watch YOUR TEAM. When the Dolphins aren't playing, I LOVE RZC. I watch it during every commercial break of Phins games.

I have to renegotiate with DirecTV every three months or so to get my the rate that I agree on every time I call in. I had to do the same thing with Verizon FiOS, Cox and Comcast over the years when I've had them as service providers. It is unfortunately part of having pay TV service. Until I can get all the live sports I want without it, I'll be a slave to it.

I can tell you that Cable TV providers will be testing out "mini-packages" soon that will allow you to get close to the a-la-carte channel lineup you want. They realize it's the direction they will have to go to compete with streaming services.

Do you really believe the things you say? RedZone isn't about idle time. Yes, they cut away from the Chiefs/Dolphins game, but you didn't miss a single play in the Red Zone. And after the Cardinals game finished, they showed quite a bit of the Chiefs/Dolphins game that wasn't in the red zone.

I admit that I don't know a lot about the revenue sharing model, but even if they offered a team package, why would they not share the revenue the same way? How would this hurt small market teams?

The biggest problem with my idea is how the money IS split based on the team selected. Let's use the example of "Follow Your Team" pricing in which you select your team and they select 3 other game channels you must watch.

Let's start by saying there are 2M NFL Ticket Subscribers (close estimate according to details in the last DirecTV deal).

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/8/25/6065269/nfl-sunday-ticket-directv-contract-renewal

Of the 2M subscribers, let's say 500,000 are Cowboy's fans, 200,000 are Giants fans and 200,00 are 49er fans.

Do you think the owners of the Cowboys, Giants and 49ers would want a larger share of the pie since their teams are the most picked?

Now imagine how the "other 3 games" are selected based on location and market. Can you see how eventually the most popular teams would benefit more from branding and revenue sharing than the other teams? It becomes a giant problem for the NFL because they can't sell ads for Tampa Bay games or Green Bay games or Oakland games. Yet, these teams are each 1/32 of the league. Without them, the diversity in the league is lost.

I don't think any of us want to see the league start to have the same problems that baseball has now. Or moreso, revert back to the old days when the Cowboys and other major market teams could leverage themselves in free agency against the smaller teams.

At some point, with a "Follow Your Team" plan those greedy owners of popular teams will want a larger piece of the pie. And that's what they've worked so hard to prevent. The Shield is a better product when all teams play on an even playing field.
