NFL bans "horse-collar" tackle

I think it'd be fine in the Dolphins forum. It's a pretty big deal if you ask me and deserves to be in the main forum.

ok thanx for filling me in guys

But who really goes to that forum ???
I think it deserves to be on the main forum but I'm not the one in charge.
Sorry to the mods for making another one LOL
But I did incorporate the Dolphins into the topic because Ricky's dreads were fair game, but someone's shoulder pads aren't.

It should have been Banned it was a chicken **** tackle... If you are close enough to use that move then you are close enough for a "textbook" tackle and Roy williams is a piece of **** for useing it more than once... the first time I can exuse but after putting someone out for the year the first time he should have stopped...its one thing to "punish" someone but the horse collar was just dirty.

rules like this ruin the game

horse collar tackle is simply grabing the back of the jearsy at the neck line or the top of the sholderpads at the back neck line and pulling a player down from there..
hello... that kind of thing happens all the time... whats next... no tackling by the jersey?
no hitting in the stomach
lets just play 2 hand touch!

I guess "chop-blocking" and and diving at someones exposed knees is "good football" also... Im sure any of us old schoolers remember Dwight Stephenson career ended early from one of those "normal" techniques... lets tie a rope around your neck let you run full speed and have a 220 pound man grab it and drop to the ground...its cheap and it should have been banned if your in the position to use the "horse collar" your in position to form tackle there is no need for it.

Roy Williams injured 4 players last year using that tactic. I know you wouldn't be complaining if one of the stars of our team was one of them. It puts the ball carrier in a very awkward position and the NFL was right to outlaw it.

the argument the if you are close enough to "horse collar" then you are close enough to "wrap up" is nonsense. you might be close enough to dive at the legs, but you find that objectionable too. Im not saying that the play shouldnt be banned, because it IS fairly likely to result in injury, Im just saying that your argument about "why" is invalid.
Lets say you are playing FS. The slot receiver catches the ball in stride just past the LBs and is now in the open field running full steam. You take a decent angle, but he is faster than you so when you get to him he is 2-3 feet from you but moving away. You can reach out and horse collar him, or you can let him score, but there is no possible way you are going to "textbook" tackle the guy. Just because Williams was in a position to make a clean tackle and chose not to doesnt mean thats the case in every situation.

Maybe if you go in there, there it alot of people that post in that forum. This doesnt deserve to be in the mian forum because this doesnt invlove anything about Dolphins. This is a NFL thing, so it should go in the General Forum.

Ill give you that arguement because you are right in that situation...but to me its not worth the injuries and like you said Roy was in position to form takle on all the occasions he used it and hurt players... if that is the question you have to let the guy score vs possibly ending his career..imho.and im sure the reason for the banning was the blatant use of it to hurt/intimidate and not stop a gamebreaker.

Ten years from now it will no longer be the NFL. It will be the NTFL (National Touch Football League)

whatever..I never saw one of Roys "knee rippers" on "Jacked up" just some slo-mo of the players knee joint getting bent in a way nature never intended then finally giving way under the stress...followed with a surgery a year or so of rehab and "hopfully" a continued career... the most intimidating players in just about every era never used that bull****... Ive never heard Ronnie Lott or Steve Atwater being accused of being "touch" football players.

I can ASSURE you that both Atwater and Lott used the "horse collar" tackle on more than a couple of occasions. It won't be long and they will ban another type of tackle...then probably another. Football is a rough sport. People get hurt. I can see banning dirty hits or blocks, but there are quite a few occasions when the horse collar tackle is a must, last resort to save a TD. And defenders are paid to stop the offense from scoring.
