NFL instituting "N Word" penalty due to Bullygate?

Roger Goodell is ruining the NFL. In about ten years the NFL will be a flag football league.

What does this have to do with the "N" word? NFL has already forbidden players and coaches from bad mouthing refs after games or they fine them and that's been around since before Goodell...this is basically an extension of that, an extension of what's permissible.

Just imagine a ref throwing a flag and walking out to the middle of the field during a game to announce "15 yards against the offense for the use of the N-word". Can you say "Laughing stock"?

The rule is for any racial slurs, not just the n word, I think it was a combination of bullygate were you have a black guy who claims he was offended by it and the gay guy who will be subjected to all kind of gay slurs during the game......smart move by the NFL, get out in front of it....if I was a coach or owner I would ban any racial slurs in the building just like at any other place of employment....

All this is, is a PR move. They'll throw a couple of flags during the year to "show they care and are enforcing the law," but it is just a facade to mend some fences with the PC thumpers of the USA. It's going to be near impossible to weed out racial language on the field of play. Most of these players aren't necessarily racist, but it is just in their vernacular to use the dreaded "N-Word." The NFL has to maintain its new PC image. As always, this is just a stunt aimed at bringing in more money.

They should just force every player to watch "12 Years a Slave"... I don't know how they could feel good using that word casually after seeing it used in the historical context like that movie shows.

I heard a discussion on the Zaslow Show this morning that the NFL is likely going to add a 15 yard penalty for the use of the N word on the field. This was partially brought about due to the Bullygate scandal.

I'd assume this would be in effect no matter how the word is used, so I would expect this to really hurt black players more than anything because I highly doubt a white guy has EVER used that word ON the field in the past 40 years.

It's obvious they are trying to chhange the culture so that this kind of language would also begin to be tempered in the lockerroom as well. Not sure it will work the way they envision.

No word yet on whether the Redskins will be penalized 15 yards on every down for using a racial slur as their name...

I am not surprised about this at all. And yes I think the Martin case has EVERYTHING to do with this proposed change. I called this a couple of months ago. As a Caucasian, I hate the word and it is bad no matter who uses it. If I could organize a few hundred people I would picket in front of every Hip-Hop artist's home that use the word in their songs.
