-Right now you can get a 70 hour Tivo DVR for free through Circuit City. $99 and $99 rebate from Directv.

i was thinking of adding a standard def one for 99, or a deal like that...but i wanted one piece of equipment to handle everything::

hd channels
sd channels
DVR so i can tivo HD stuff...

Dont have mine hooked up to a phone line. No phone in the house except my cell phones, they can still do updates through there satillites. I told them I went on vacations and temporarly discontinued my service until I got back (cough Football season). Thencall then and reactivated it. no problems

Just another tidbit, if anyone is thinkng of getting a HDTV and your room isn't real bright, you have to get a Projector, I have my HD receiver hooked up to my projector and I have a 110" screen. The picture is awesome you could never tell the difference between that and a $7000 plasma. Projectors go for about $900 - $1500 for average ones.

Nothing like watching the Fins in life size. :D

Playing Madden is also unbelievalbe on a screen that size.

a lesson i just learned:

since directv is contract based they want to keep your business.

for example, i just got an directv high definition DVR receiver for 299 + 100 mail in rebate.

that piece of hardware retails for 700 bucks for normal customers.

if you want in on this deal call directv and make your way to the "Customer Retention" department.

tell them you are unhappy, digital cable offers their dvr's for so much cheaper, you lose signal in storms....whatever you want.

you will walk away with free hbo, showtime, and cinemax for 6 months and 500 bucks off a badass DVR HD rcvr just for telling the truth....

dont be a normal customer, make them hook you up!!! they will do it!!!

WOW...I just turned them down because I went in as a "normal" customer and to get my house done with the HD/DVR on one TV and just a normal hook-up on the second they wanted $700. Damn...I may have to call em' back!!! Phin, thanx for the info!!!

I really want Directv service so I can get the NFL package, but getting service seems like a headache. Is it true your unit has to be hooked up to a phone line or not?, I've been told many things - good and bad about directv, and I don't know anyone personally that has it and the salesman is going to tell you nothing but good things. Just looking for any information, advice, etc. to help me make a decision. I usually go to the bars, but It would be nice to watch in comfort of my own home. I live in Virginia and all we get is Redskins and Ravens games locally, only so much I can take of that. Also, should I cancel my cable before or after I order Directv service. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

Here is the quick 411:

I have cable tv, cable internet, vonage internet phone company and direct tv (with sunday ticket).

For the Sunday Ticket: all you need a yr scrip (about $45/month to direct tv. No phone needed. You only need a phone line for their newer services and PPV.

so *** You dont need phone service for the Sunday Ticket***

Get the Sunday Ticket if your football team is not a local team. Like me... I live in southern NJ. My favorite team is the Fins.... but through local channels... I rarely get Dolphins games. I can get all the Eagles games I want... but that doesnt help.

The only advantages of keeping your local cable is for cable internet and if your favorite "away" team (Dolphins) played your local team... Even with the Sunday Ticket... the local rights to the game will be a priority and thus have the game blacked out. So in that case... the cable company will only air the game.

and lastly...

porn is much better on a satellite provider! (but you need a phone connection for PPV!) Then again.... you can download porn faster with a cable internet connection!!! lol

i read about this 299 offer on a forum somewhere and people were saying that they would be told no by one agent...then call back and they would say yes.

i read that about 2 weeks ago...now, on monday this week is when i called. keep in mind ive only been a customer for about 6 months or so .....its not like ive been a 5 year veteran of dtv hehe

keep in mind you can order PPV through DTV's website...and when you do it that way all your tvs get it instead of just the one you ordered it on.

that site sells one thing a day...most of the time its good deals...today's item is pretty kickass imo

it is refurbished but it has some warranty going on...that tv would have a gorgeous picture....

and before anyone reads their hilarious descriptions, YES they are a reputable site, i have bought from them many times in the past.

NOPE. You got to get the whole ticket.... about $200!

Not to mention the yearly subscription... another $400.

No, they want you to have a phone line connected but you don't have to have one connected. You can still order PPV and things without one too. My cousin just ordered the WWE PPV Summer Slam the other night without a phone line connected.
