Breaking: Patriots QB Tom Brady loses appeal, 4-game "Deflategate" suspension uphled by commissioner Roger Goodell

ESPN

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has upheld the four-game suspension imposed on Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's role in deflating game footballs.

In Monday's announcement, Goodell emphasized important new information disclosed by Brady and his representatives in connection with the hearing into what has been known as Deflategate.

Brady appealed the penalty, levied in May, on June 23 to Goodell, who served as arbitrator in the case.

Attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who has had success taking on the NFL in other high-profile cases, led Brady's defense and said at one time that he had "a very compelling case" to change the initial outcome of Brady's punishment.

League claims Brady had cellphone DESTROYED after requests by investigators to turn over texts.

"On or shortly before March 6, the day that Tom Brady met with independent investigator Ted Wells and his colleagues, Brady directed that the cell phone he had used for the prior four months be destroyed. He did so even though he was aware that the investigators had requested access to text messages and other electronic information that had been stored on that phone," the league's statement read. "During the four months that the cell phone was in use, Brady had exchanged nearly 10,000 text messages, none of which can now be retrieved from that device. The destruction of the cell phone was not disclosed until June 18, almost four months after the investigators had first sought electronic information from Brady."

NFL: 'Mr. Brady willfully obstructed investigation by affirmatively arranging for destruction of his cellphone'

Tom Brady can apply for work at the IRS or State Dept. during his suspension.

I still think he goes to court and wins. Vilma won in court and this is alot like that. There is no rule saying if you do x you will be suspended for z number of games. That will always win for the player in court

Good. If you are innocent, you don't destroy the cell phone. You might refuse to let them see it, but you don't destroy it.

Regarding the cell carrier saying messages can no longer be retrieved, that sounds kinda silly - the messages should be on a server of theirs somewhere - i imagine if a subpoena was ordered, they could retrieve them. That said i don't feel it is necessary - stick with 4 games and move on.

Oh it's going to court but since Brady destroyed his cell phone doesn't look too good for Mr. Brady's reputation.

Tom Brady & NFLPA will see the NFL in court. 2 options: fast-track it with an injunction or slow-play, keep it going until after the season
