There was some speculation about her becoming the Czarina and taking over the whole lot, without skills as a player evaluator. The other big deal is that she is an extremely well educated (degrees in law, finance and accounting including a juris doctorate) and successful woman smashing the glass ceiling and some of our resident Finheaven misogynists get a little uncomfortable because she appears to have the strong support of the owner, Stephen Ross.
Speculation huh? Who speculated? The media and those who liked Ireland and/or hate Philbin. Nobody from the Dolphins ever said that Aponte is considered to take over player evaluations. You would figure that if that is the plan they would have announced it along with candidates they are pursuing.
What this has become is a simple witch hunt looking for a scapegoat that Philbin has not been fired and/or trying to explain to those who liked Ireland why he was fired.
A person in the position of Aponte has naturally the ear of the owner. She is handling his money through cap strategy and contract negotiations. A person who handles the money will always be close to a company owner.
I am not saying it will not happen that Aponte will be promoted into a position we may not want her to be in but at this point everything is pure speculation and in some ways sexist hate speech by media and some fans has overshadowed our needs. The Dolphins do the right thing right now: they look within the organization and outside.
I wanted Philbin gone as well. I was for a clean sweep. But it is not up to me to decide who stays or goes nor am I involved in the day-to-day operations of the Dolphins. I got the closest I will get for a clean sweep and for me that is a good start. I am willing to give Philbin another year to see how the Dolphins do with a change at OC and GM. There are of course people I don't want at GM per say. I don't want Tannebaum nor do I want Magini in any position. After becoming the Dallas Cowboys Southeast and then the Texas A&M East and the Green Bay Packers South I refuse to become the New York Jets Bahamas version (no pun intended Tyler).
But right now all we do is speculate because we do not know how the search is conducted or what Ross has in mind.
One more thing to Dawn Aponte. Aponte is an a-typical corporate executive who wants to succeed. She is no different than her male counter part. She is driven by success and she is driven to succeed. Her responsibilities were mostly on the financial side and she has presented a darn good product. We look really good for the next few years capwise even with the financial splash we did last offseason. If you look at this organization the only good you can find is actually her job and those who are working with her in the financial area. If you look for a reason to get rid of her you have to hope that she leaves on her own terms. Based on her job performance there is no way that Ross would just get rid of her.
If you look for intangibles like power struggles inside the organization we are left to speculation again and the typical "I Heard from someone who spoke to someone who knows someone...." We do not know what goes on inside and we will never know because there are always two sides to every story. The only one who can sort this out is Ross.
Power struggles are common in corporate America. There two types of power struggles. One which benefits a company and one which hurts a company. It is also up to the owner of a company to decide what kind of power struggle goes on and make his decision based on his own findings.
If Aponte and Ireland had indeed a power struggle than for me as an outsider the decision is very easy: Ireland failed in his job and Aponte succeeded in her job. So the decision who to let go is quite easy.
