O-line Coaching Question

For me, the measuring stick on Benton is Dallas Thomas. If he can turn that guy into a decent O-linemen this year- OG or RT, I don't care which - then I will be impressed because we MIGHT just be making progress with our OL for a change.

I thought the QB coach was the relative. But even if he's not related, it's a form of nepotism to hire people over and over because of loyalty and familiarity and not necessarily talent. Parcells did that with Sparano. Philbin likes loyalty and familiarity, and if you notice when he's asked what he likes about a person he often will say that person knows when to "shut their mouth." (He said this in reference to Turner, as well). I initially though Turner was just a Sherman guy, but Turner worked under Philbin at Northeastern. So he was an employee of both of them at some point. So when Philbin becomes head coach, instead of mining the Packers staff like we thought he would, he went slumming for a guy from college who wasn't promoted even after doing this job (O line coach) for 20 years.

You are dead wrong if you think Parcells hired Sparano only because he was friends and loyal to him, don't forget this guy when calling the plays with the Cowboys in 2006 had a top 5 offense and his tenure in Dallas he fixed the O line and produced an all pro at TE while he was the TE/oline coach, he is also the only coach to every take a team to the playoffs after a 1 win season the previous yr.....Sparano can coach, he was in a bad situation, lost his confidence and didn't know how to fix it....he will be a better HC if he gets another chance......

Now we just need to get Ken O'Keefe out and we can have a decent NFL-standard coaching staff.

If he's the receiver coach? Then my only beef with him is dear lord please teach M.Wallace how to make a play on the ball.

Easily, 50% of the under-thrown balls to M.Wallace could have been called PI if he gave the extra effort to attack the ball and have an already beaten defender that much more blatantly run into him( The refs didn't call a few of them last season).....SO freaking frustrating!

You don't always have to catch the ball to make a big play Mr.Wallace

Hard to say on Turner. If you wanna go by sacks alone, he had 4 f the same 5 on the OL in 2012, and we gave up 28 sacks, with everyone blocking better on the run. RT did throw a lot more last year, and Long or any semblance of a replacement was not here.

Not saying that Benton is not better but, Philbin insisted on a ZBS without the players to play it.

This is a tough question. I have been critical of Jim Turner and the techniques on show, however when you consider what he coached at A&M and the players he has produced, he clearly is a quality coach.

Was/is he good enough for the NFL - we'll only know if he gets another shot. In his defence - I think he did a decent to good job with the talent he had.

Like many of us, I am very keen to see what Benton can do - what he coached at Houston and the run techniques in particular - more pure outside stretch blocking footwork than Miami ran last year - but again, will he have the type of player required and will this be a requirement from the new OC. So many unanswered questions that we will only be able to answer once the season unfolds.

if bentons players are not good, he will look exactly like turner did.

not as huge of an upgrade as most think. very good coach but he wouldnt have done SQUAT with last years garbage.

no one could.

...At the same time, we did have a lot of square pegs in round holes. The blocking scheme we run requires more athleticism and we didn't have that

For those interested, below is a link to a Houston Texans video taken in 2008 where they interview several players about the new ZBS that Alex Gibbs (previously of the Broncos) installed. Benton worked for Gibbs at the time, so there should be similarities with what we are planning to do this year.

how do you know he didnt try? can you explain that HONEYB?

not every coach can just get up and walk away. and like players, some dont want to live in a certain state or city. there are many factors involved in getting coaches and players other than ok, i want that guy and he comes to the team.

case in point, philbin wanted benton as the o-line coach when he was hired but benton had contractual issues and couldnt get out of the texans. but everyone bashed philbin about hiring such a "bad coach" after things went sour saying these very things like why didnt he hire a better coach, he is just a crony, wanted his pals only, etc..... .

so again, instead of just saying philbin is a icky poo and and a stupid dum-dum, maybe look into circumstances before just saying philbin didnt raid the packers staff for all the good coaches and just hired nobodys and failures because they are his pals.

and there ARE good coaches who have been fired. look at benton. i dont see anyone crying about his hiring and he just got fired and had better o-line than we did!!

the philbin bashing by the fans is getting goofier all the time.

dont you mean hoping our qb can learn to hit him in stride down the field instead of coanstantly launching hi balls where wallace has to stand in one spot and wait untill the ball falls out of the sky and the defenders are all over him.

thats what you menat, right? it was a type-o.

no one EVER has an answer why wallace didnt have all these so called "cant make a play on the ball" issues in pittsbugh. what, all of a sudden he comes to miami and forgets how to play?

or maybe he had a much better qb in pittsburgh who excells at the long ball and consistently hit wallace in stride?

the evidence speaks for itself. so why do fans keep saying things like that? people are taking most of the down field, big play issues and puting them on wallace instead of where it mostly belongs, on TANNEHILL!!!

HOPEFULLY tanny will figure that out and correct it as that is one of the 3 team corrections philbin wants this offseason.
