This prediction is from a post I made on an other forum; but I feel also fits here. Please note that I often put primary value on some "positions of need", which represent positions I feel we are too weak at. I've attached some potential names, but what I am really interested in is the BPA at that position. I don't know which player is the BPA, so I selected from a proposed list of the top fifty draft picks and we all know how accurate those can be! I don't know how many draft selections we will have by the draft, so I just allowed for the two forth round picks I've red about.
For this forecast I'm assuming that there will be 5 QB's taken in the top 10 picks, and some top level names will drop to the end of the 3rd and the middle of the 4th round.
1st round at 11 - Nelson, OG and BPA. We select here for BPA with a possible change for a defensive player, if an NFL ready defender is available.
2nd round at 43 - Edmunds, ILB. We select here for need, not BPA, just for defensive linebackers.
3rd round at 75 - Holland, DE. We select here for need, either a QB or DE.
4th round at 113 - Freeman, RB. We select here for need, either a QB or RB.
4th round at 132 - Andrews, TE. We select here for need, either a QB or TE.
5th round - We select here for need, either a QB or a Linebacker (any position in the defensive backfield)
6th round - We select BPA, biased for a safety or running back. At this point we will do better getting a FA for QB if we haven't drafted one.
7th round - We select BPA, offense or defense.
UDFA's - We keep looking for the gold that doesn't glitter.
We no longer have so many holes to fill that we need to go BPA at every selection and can expect that we cover a need. I expect the Front office will be using their draft board looking to step back when possible in order to get more late round draft picks. Since this draft class does not seem to be highly gifted, we would gain more than we would loose by increasing our number of later round draft picks.
Our track record over the last two years is beginning to show that our drafted players are working out at a much higher percentage than I initially expected. We are also having some unexpected successes with our UDFA's. This bodes well for the future.
