Scouting Report: Travis Daniels
Vital Statistics
Position: CB School: LSU
Height: 6-1 Weight: 194 lbs.
Daniels had planned to redshirt as a true freshman, but he was forced into action versus Tennessee in the SEC Championship game in 2001, when an injury to teammate Randall Gay left LSU short at the defensive back spots. In that game, Daniels broke up two passes, and also saw some action against Illinois in the Sugar Bowl. In 2002, he saw some action in nickel and dime packages, but he was slowed by a hamstring injury for much of the season. That year, he played in five games and finished with three tackles and a pass breakup. Daniels started the first six games of his junior year at free safety before moving to his natural cornerback position for the final eight. He finished the season with 58 tackles, a team-leading 26 pass breakups, and two interceptions, one of which he returned 48 yards for a TD. He also recorded 6.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks. Daniels is a very instinctive corner with great route recognition. He's smart, savvy, and will cut off routes and positions to make plays. He does not have great closing speed, and he needs to improve on his footwork. He attacks the ball when he sees it, but can struggle at times in off coverage. He's a solid tackler, times his blitzes nicely, and can play any position in the defensive backfield.
