OTA #1 Updates

but from your list, it seems like Philbin should be a 0-4 win team every year. if you think he's middle of the road, what does he do good, to get to 8-8? Because surely you don't think a coach that's that terrible, can reach 8-8. And don't tell me you don't think he's terrible. You just made a whole list as to why he's pretty bad.

Philbin is a dull bulb. The way he handles himself and relates to players inspires no confidence whatsoever... I can tell just from a few interviews and press conferences that Lazor is a guy that can relate to players, motivate them and get the most of them. Philbin has demonstrated over and over that he doesn't have that ability. Even without seeing Lazor coach one down of football, I would still rather have him as head coach over Philbin, a coach has proven to be mediocre at best.

I shouldn't agree with this, given how recent Lazor is to the pros and to an OC position, but I kind of do anyway. Philbin is a GM type more than a HC. As well as clearly being a good coach, Lazor looks and sounds like a guy players would go out and play for, which is a big deal.

I think Kevin Coyle is a great coach and good leader too, so at least we finally have a little bit of buzz at the key coaching positions.

I want to stick a fork in my eye when I listen to Joe Philbin speak. It's that inspiring. But if we get the results, I don't care how he does it.

I agree.

Philbin is a hierarchy guy. He shuffles some papers around and delegates to his coaches, and yells at Mike Sherman when something isn't working, and yet, frustratingly, can also micromanage at times (Sherman openly said Philbin intervened in play calling). He fires at will. We have people like this in our office, too. They are career corporate people, who excel at staying in good graces of the CEO, not making too many mistakes, avoiding blame, and having a very strong team surrounding them. Take them out of their element and ask them to innovate or accomplish something on their own and they show their mediocrity.

Lazor is a hands-on guy, and a teacher. He's doing what Philbin claimed he'd do when he got here - teach, innovate, hold players to a high standard. If we see existing players suddenly excelling where before they didn't (like Egnew), then we know that our coaches didn't know what they're doing. The comments I hear Lazor making, they're very specific, and you can almost see the wheels turning in his head. Right away he wasn't happy with the communication on the line and said we're losers if we don't fix it, NOW, not tomorrow. He was immediately not satisfied with Tanny's decision-making speed, accuracy and holding the ball too long. But not for the purpose of lowering the boom, but to correct the issues. These are fundamentals he's going to fix. The previous coach, Sherman, seemed to be focusing on Tannehill not making mistakes and drilling that into him. You don't win games by avoiding mistakes, you win games by making big plays. Otherwise, Henne would still be here!

And this is just my opinion.

let's see what the new offense looks like before we annoint the guy hc material

Not true. Depending on the OC and DC the team still has a chance to be in and win games that don't matter. The problem will surface when the players/team need something above Xs and Os. When the team needs to believe in it's leader for direction and confidence, but with Philbin they get the opposite. When the team needs leadership the most is when he seems to disappear IMO.

Last year was a bad year for any coach, and the year before that was his first, so I am trying to be hopeful, but I am starting to see a lot of things about him that I saw at first that are starting to play out like I feared. If this team is 8-8 or worse I think he has to be replaced, and to be honest I really don't see 8-8 out of this team with him as the HC.

From what I have read....it looks like Lazor is going to ride Tannehill hard in these camps....Good.

I'm one who thinks Tannehill has all the skills and believe this change is going to be huge for him....take him to another level. You want someone who is going to deman perfection out of the QB and will not stop pushing until it is achieve, then still find something wrong. I could be wrong, but getting away from Sherman could be the best thing for Tannehill.

In that post I also said coaches like Childress and Caldwell, who are both bad coaches, managed to take their teams to the championship game with great QBing, so it's possible for bad coaches to be somewhat successful, but never champions.

I have seen NOTHING to suggest Philbin is a championship caliber HC, and neither has anyone else. He tops out as a Brad Childress, and I would rather not waste my time with that.

I have. Stephen Ross obviously has. Your assessment on Philbin is completely nonsensical. Here's a hint: Using your logic I can make the exact same assessment on Tannehill. If we cut Tannehill today many people would rejoice, many would be meh and many would be livid, which group would be correct?

I would trust Lady Gaga's opinion on football matters before I would trust that doofus Ross's...

We can see tangible evidence of talent in Tannehill, not in Philbin. Philbin is one of those guys that gets promoted to a position way over their head, but they really belong and excel in a lesser role.

And that's why I (and many others) cant take your hyperbolic assessment of Joe Philbin seriously.

Lady Gaga.....yea ok....

Maybe I see the correlation because they both look and act like they should be principals.

childress couldn't motivate a ham sandwich...this team would have never recovered for even the time that it did after bully gate with childress...the last bills game that loss was completely on personnel deficiencies not on the preparedness of the players if you want to say week 17 that the hc shares some of the blame for that showing i can go along with that...

I agree that the Bills game was mostly on the horrid OL performance, but coaching is not absolved. Sherman was calling an awful game, no adjustments whatsoever, and Philbin did nothing to stop it. No leadership.

He did try to hire Jim Harbaugh...

You can't see tangible evidence on Philbin, I can. Many people on these boards say that Tannehill is mediocre at best, why should I trust your opinion over theirs?
