2020 cant get here soon enough
Petty simple for those who have been following the Dolphins since Shula exit its called churning which leads to miedorcre team we have been enduring. New GM's and coaches bring new structure and rebuilding projects which retards the growth of the team. The only coach that really had a winning record since Shula was Dave Wanstant (which most Dolphin fans are not fans of) but Dave W. won more than the rest of them because Dave W. did not churn the team he inherrited from Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy Johnson had built a good defense but was lacking in the offense department which Dave recognized and then traded for Ricky Williams and guess what we had a playoff team. Jeff Ireland chose McCoy over Philbin IMO for that reason recognizing that Philbin want to churn the team in his image while McCoy was willing to work with the foundation that was already there. Anyway we will see maybe you just might be right we have the right man for the job but so far I am not betting on it.
When the Seahawks GM John Schneider took over in one of his first pressers he said he was working off a four year plan, and four years later they are the SuperBowl champs. They have arguably one of the best GMs in the league, arguably an excellent head coach and arguably a young but already elite QB, so if they can be afforded four years why do we have to make decisions on Philbin with arguably one of the worst GMs in the league after only 2 years?
For me its too soon to write him off as "mediocre at best" and we're too far into his plan that it doesn't make any sense to turn around and start over on somebody else's new plan, especially if we are only willing to give the new guy 2 years. Everybody needs to get it in their head that the fairy tale Don Shula turnaround is not realistic and unless there is tangible evidence that the new guy is actually bad (like fist pumping field goals) we need to let people carry out their plans to fruition. And thanks to Ireland's ineptness Philbin is already a year behind where he could be, so him and Hickey should probably be given at least two more years.
