I know Steve Young went to BYU and a few other QB's but does anyone know how old they were and if they went on a "mission" before coming to the NFL. Also I was wondering how the later age affected the lenght of their careers.

well the only i think age does in this situation would be maturity, they may be older but they had to take a 2 year missions trip so that means they may be more durable and could last into their late thirties

This BYU grad was certainly on a "mission". Not sure if he was Mormon but wikipedia says his mom is.

Didn't Steve Young play in the USFL before he went to the NFL? I believe he was 30 years old by the time he was named the starter for the Niners (after a stint in Tampa Bay)

Is Steve Young a morman? I didn't think he was. Most of the football players who go to BYU aren't, atleast according to a friend who went to BYU.

Steve Young didn't go on a mission... but he was pretty old by the time he was the starter I think... McMahon was not mormon.... Detmer did not go on a mission and was in the league forever... but he never was terribly successful. Brandon Doman went on a mission but didn't last in the NFL. I think Beck would be the first successful mormon missionary quarterback in the NFL if he pans out. I believe that only one other mormon missionary quarterback ever led BYU to a conference championship. I don't know about mormons that weren't at BYU.

Saw an interview with McMahon and he said the day after his last football game as a senior at BYU he was expelled....hmmm...football above principles. Sounds like BYU had their priorities straight back then.

He also said something like, "The best thing about BYU was seeing it in my rear-view mirror the day I got kicked out of that school."

I may be going out on a limb, but I am pretty sure Jim's "mission" back then was to party, have a good time, get laid, and play football.

Steve Young is definitely mormon... in fact I think he is a descendant of Brigham Young who BYU is named after.

Anyone catch the Raider segment on NFL network yesterday? Todd Christensen(sp?), a fromer Raider TE had me choked up. He's Mormon. I'd be damn proud to have a guy of that character play on my football team.

he is a descendant of Brigham Young, as a matter of fact ... don't make me provide a link .. .too busy lol

SD Charger fan here, but long time respecter of the Dolphins. After you nabbed Cam and drafted Beck (from my alma mater) I decided to follow along the Phins rebuilding process.

I'm reluctant to label anyone because religious tendancies can change, but this is my limited understanding of the religious status of some past qb's.

Mormon (at least at some point)
Steve Young
Danny White
Ty Detmer
Scott Mitchell
Gifford Nielson
Marc Wilson
Brandon Doman
Robbie Bosco

Not Mormon (but played at BYU)
McMahon
Sarkisian (CFL) USC OC

you are correct sir. steve young also has 13 children by two wives, fyi. as in two wives at the same time.

Yeah I was just going to say, Steve Young isn't JUST a mormon, he's a direct descendant of one of the two most important figures in Mormon history, lol.

BTW, has anyone seen the movie Orgasmo? Because I have to tell you, I can't see John Beck speak without thinking of Trey Parker's character in that movie.

"Jesus, dude."

"Where???"
