Our Biggest Strength On Offense/defense

Whoa, slow down trigger. Did you compare their stats last year? I just did...more TDs and catches by Landry. Almost identical yards. You’re gonna say ya but his YARDS PER CATCH were SO LOW! Did he move the ball forward and how many times people!?!? Sheesh... and Baldwin will be 30 beginning of this season...and Landry returned kicks. Sorry pal, you’re wrong. Baldwin on his decline.

I don't care that Landry returned kicks. He was not a prolific returner, just a safe option. You've got to be kidding me saying Baldwin is on his decline when he is still performing as a #1 receiver. Tell that to Larry Fitzgerald.

Bobby McCain is the highest paid slot corner In the NFL and he’s the 5-8th best slot CB. Fins paid him top dollar at his position and would only pay Landry 13 mil? Which means they wanted him, just at their price. And he’s the top slot WR in the NFL. This is the kinda dumb stuff mediocre teams do.

BTW, it was extension for McCain. He wasn’t going anywhere this year. So dumb! This is no knock on McCain either. I actually like him, just shows why they’re not taking the leap from mediocrity.

Get over Landry. He's gone and it's most likely for the best.

I actually am very excited about Tannehill if he can stay healthy, I think our O-Line will be better and have better depth and for the first time in his career,Tannehill will have a legit red zone threat at TE and also if Parker can stay healthy at receiver as well.

How many WRs in the last 10 years performed at a WR1 (top 12) level at: 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35 years of age? It’s: 9, 5, 6, 4, 0, 1, 1. This is the elite group, whereas the decline for all WRs starts at 27.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread about our strongest piece rather it be on offense or defense.......... I rarely create threads, so go hijack someone elses. Preferably on a Browns forum, as I’m sure they will be glad to share your same thoughts

is it possible that our biggest strength rather on offense or defense is our defensive backfield? Hear me out......
We drafted a ROY candidate in Minkah. X is finally coming into his own and is becoming a lock down corner. McCain is a top 5 slot corner. We already know about Reshad. TJ gets a full offseason to gel with the rest of the defense. Tankersley is coming off a promising rookie campaign. And to top it all off we get an emerging Lippett back from injury.

Some may argue that our D-line might be our strength but I think it has too many question marks. Last year going into the season you coulda said it was our WR corp but not this year. Definitely not our offensive line or linebackers. I’m excited about the RB position as well as the rookie TEs but have yet to prove anything so far.

What say you ?

Yes, Fins secondary is their best unit and mostly young too which is important if they want it to maintain this strength. 1st contracts are very affordable. 2nd and 3rd contracts are where it hurts, but keeping them homegrown is smart. Usually, an early extension is a good way to lock them up before they get too expensive. Which is one reason why extending McCain at top dollar doesn’t make sense to me, but I’m happy they locked him up. I think they could have saved 1-2 mil per season. It also sends a great message to the rest of the team that if you work hard, be a leader, then Fins will take care of you.

D-line is not their strength. People think Quinn is going to be a beast. He’s 28, which isn’t terrible on its own but also has a myriad of injuries over his career. Concussions, back surgery, hand surgery, shoulder issue, and missed tons of practice time due to other illnesses and dehydration. Not a bad guy to have, just trying to temper the hype on him. 8-10 sacks is about right. Wake is old but I love the guy. Harris needs to step it up. Godchaux has stepped it up, but he’s not special. And Phillips is underachieving.

You’re probably right. But I’m a Fins fan. Point taken and I posted on the topic.

How did this become a Landry post? Oh. that's right, JahnDho is here. Please just stop. We know how you feel about Landry - do we really need to have every thread hi-jacked.

You’re right. I used him in the context about why their secondary is their strength but they lack wisdom in signing McCain as the highest paid slot corner. Then it took off from there. I’ll try to refrain from bringing him up unless others do.

Get over Landry. He's gone and it's most likely for the best.

I doubt some will get over it. There are still those who dredge up Matt Ryan with freqency.
But, to topic, WR could be the best unit. A lot of that depends on Gase

WR has a chance to be a strength.

Miami has at least 5 guys not counting TEs who can get open and make plays. All of them have done that here or on other teams.

It’s up to Gase and Ryan to make it all work and let everyone have the chance to eat and make plays.

DE looks like a strong group too. I think it goes like this:

DE - Wake, Quinn, Hayes and projecting of Harris makes this our best group right now I believe.
WR - If Parker emerges this could be our best group. I love the versatility and SPEED they present.
Secondary - I love Jones, what I've read about Minkah, Howard and think McCain is solid but the rest of the group has some proving to do. Could potentially be our best.
O-line - Best group we've had in a while. I expect this to be fixed.
RB - Strong group, Like the mix of age and youth.
QB - Would be higher for Ryan but I don't believe in the backups.
DT - We have guys who range from adequate to good with a chance for a couple to be very good. We lost a guy who was ELITE.
TE - A lot is riding on the rookie TE's, this to me is one of the biggest ?? on the team.
LB - I still don't know what to make of this group. I do believe it will be better than the previous 2 seasons athletically but am still wary. Kiko still has to play a large role and we've seen how easily he's beaten in coverage. McMillan has never played a down and as positive as finheaven is about him his scouting report says he struggles with coverage. Will he be the nickel with Alonso or will it be chicken with his head cut off Anthony or the rookie Baker. Still the biggest ?? on the team IMO.

I think the elephant in the room is stopping the run. If we consistently give up 5-7 on first down, it's going to be a long day.

If our newfound linebackers can't cover, again long day.

Yes, the secondary should be a top unit, but for it to dominate, everyone else must do their jobs.

Def agree here, we have done nothing outside of get McMillan back to address the run. That is my biggest question mark for this team by far going into the season. I like our secondary and our DE's, but DT and LB still are concerning for me.

I don't think we have one unit that is established enough to be considered a strength. We just have hopefuls.

Hopefully our d-line won't turn to crap without Suh.

Hopefully the return of McMillan means our LB corps improves which means hopefully McMillan isn't a total bust.

Hopefully Gore doesn't fall off due to age.

Hopefully Tunsil can take the next step, James can stay healthy, Sitton doesn't continue his pattern of getting injured. Kilgore can at least be serviceable.

Hopefully Amendola isn't just a product of Brady and can stay healthy, hopefully Wilson isn't just a product of Andy Reid who more often than not puts out a top 10 offense. Hopefully Parker steps up and stays healthy.

Hopefully our up and coming defensive backs keep going up and reach their potential.

Hopefully Tannehill famed 2016 8 game stretch can be duplicated over the entire 2018 season.

Hopefully Gase knows what he's doing.

So I guess our strength is keeping hope alive.

I wouldn't call it a strength really, I think we are pretty average at WR. Stills would not be a #1 on most other teams, and I certainly am not counting on parker to do squat. I like Wilson/Amendola/Grant as more slot/speed specialists but I am not blown away by our WR core at all.

Howard and McCain had some great games and finished the season strong but I think it's premature to say Howard is becoming a lockdown corner and McCain is a top slot corner. And despite all the promise, Minkah is still a rookie. I think the secondary has a very high ceiling and I'm excited about it. But it might be a bit early to call it a strength.
