Is the offensive line really as bad as advertised or is it preseason issues?

It is a little bit of both. Jake Long, who is not practicing at the moment, is the only player who is the only returning player manning the same spot as the end of 2010. Icognito is the left guard, after finishing the season as center. Pouncey is new to the team and the starting center. Vernon Carey is the right guard after finishing the season as the right tackle(before he got injured) and Colombo is new to the team and the starting right tackle.
There are definitely concerns on the right side with Colombo due to him struggling last year and early in camp, but really it is that the line needs to gel. Until they really get comfortable and playing at their peak, it might be a few games into the season.

So far my real worries are on the right side, unless Jake doesn't get healthy soon. Carey seems to be struggling at RG from what I have read, and maybe he is just going through the motions after taking the paycut, I don't know. Columbo seems to be a revolving door at RT and is just getting abused from the sounds of it.
I agree with Nublar that O-lines need time to gel, but not sure time is going to help Columbo or maybe even Carey.

Carey played well at RG. Pouncey played very well. Colombo is no upgrade. Incognito was incognito. Remember this a new type of blocking scheme that relies on timing and precision. The oline has not had enough time to develop those key qualities. I hope they wil before 9/12.

With Long, Incognito, Pouncey, Carey, (Columbo or Murtha), our O-Line will start off slow, but barring serious injuries, it will improve as the season goes on. By middle to late season, it should be one of the better o-lines in the league. Of course, until that point (and likely after it), people on here will complain relentlessly about Tony having a crappy O-Line when he's supposed to be an oline guru.

Jake IS healthy. He is the ONE player on this team that doesn't need to practice to dominate. Sparano is just making sure he STAYS healthy until day one while allowing himself an extra roster spot to evaluate more talent.
I have heard stuff about Carey maybe "tanking" his play . . . doubt he would do that with the last 3 years of his contract voided. He needs to play well to get another contract. He just turned 30 . . . still young enough as an OLineman to get a good deal next year.
Incognito is just out of position at LG . . . makes absolutely no sense why the Fins keep him there. He is a RG by nature with ability to play Center. Why would you have your rookie OC play Center in a shortened offseason, when you can put Ritchie there and the mobility of Pouncey on the leftside, getting more familiar with big Jake.
I just don't think Colombo was the guy to bring in . . . I am rooting for Murtha to win that job to be quite honest with you.
Still is very early . . . when a new system is implemented, the toughest transistion is on the OLine . . . . not the QB. Expect mistakes, but also expect improvement as the snaps get higher in number.

I dunno man, it is worriesome to see him still with a huge brace on and not getting the reps in practice. Hopefully you are right, but if he was "healthy" I think he would be practicing. I'm hopeful he is ready for the regular season, I think he will be.

I think Incog is getting a bad wrap around here. While he is certainly not a perennial all star, he's a nasty competitor who, as far as I can tell, has been fairly solid at every position Miami has put him at. Granted there ARE aspects of his game that aren't as good as the others (pulling) but not every o'lineman is going to accel at everything they are asked to do. Every block doesn't have to be a pancake as long as the player is consistently completing their assignments.

I don't understand why we brought in Columbo when Gaither was out there...
I'd love to see Sparano give a serious look at Garner, Jerry, and Murtha at RT, I honestly think that at least one of those guys can be better than Columbo.

I think it's almost safe to say that Jerry is or will be a bust....
Not safe to say, but he hasn't had a good start to his career. He has the talent, he needs the drive now. He didn't play that bad in the first preseason game.

Whats happ with Joe Berger. Last year he started 14 games, although not the best, I would have expected improvement this yr, but they are even testing Garner at Centre ahead of him.

From the looks of it with both John and Peria Jerry playing in the 4th qtr of the preseason, it looks like they spent their lockout time back home in Mississippi smokin gravity bongs and eatin southern bbq... While there's obviously nothing wrong with that behavior for yr average schmuck - it certainly is not conducive to a productive NFL career.
