Per Roto: JP safe Ireland still on the rock Source Herald

I remember Pennington being CLUTCH at the end of games that year and he had the highest passer rating for a Dolphins QB since 1984...

Yep, the STL, SF,SEA, KC teams of that year were some bitch beaters. Pennington led a smoke and mirrors team to the playoffs, only to **** the bed. Some great stats though.

Thanks for the update.

Would an Ireland firing be a bigger deal than when Wannstedt got canned?

(it'd be a franchise defining moment for sure but fans hated Wanny with such a venomous passion)

Can Ireland, hire Gaine as interm GM with 1 year to prove himself with JP, if it doesn't work then no more half measures next year. This is the best course of action and the best we can hope for IMO.

Pennington and that team wouldn't of laid down against Buffalo and NYJ late this season, I can tell you that much.

That team had the passion and leadership on and off the field to not sleepwalk 2 big division games like that to make the playoffs. What did they win . . . their final 5 games?

Don't compare that 2008 team to this floundering 2013 . . . don't care if the schedule is deemed "soft". We lost to Tampa and Buffalo twice this season. While in 2008 we lost the first game to the Jets with a chance to win late, we lost At Arizona with Kurt Warner/Fitz/Boldin on the team, We lost At Houston, We lost at the Ravens and we lost against New England once. We won the games we were supposed to win . . . which is more than I can say for the crap losses we had this year.

Imagine the irony, hiring and training your replacement. Don't think that one works out, especially if Ireland knew it. How can you hire an interim GM when you still have a GM in place? Still trying to wrap my brain around that one. Did you mean Ross hire an interim? Or promote Gaine for 1 year?

Gaine is already the assistant GM.

Reading what I wrote was confusing. I meant "can" as in fire Ireland.

I disagree and would love for Gaines to be in charge.

Why, if you don't like Ireland how can you like Gaine? I mean we keep hearing the complaints of Ireland not drafting good talent. Who do you think runs the scouting department? Ireland is getting his information from somewhere...

I have no problem with not likeing Ireland, but replacing him with the guy giving him all his scouting reports...really???

You don't know that. To assume that a subordinate shares the values, philosophies, and competence of his superior is a complete fallacy.

We also know that Gaine is actually liked by people around the league and around the team. Everyone despises Jeff Ireland.

I'm not saying Brian Gaine is going to save the franchise or anything, but firing Jeff and promoting Gaine would at least be a good first step.

Yes. Gaine actually has people skills and charisma, of which Ireland has neither.

Martin Mayhew and Tom LeWand worked for Matt Millen in Detroit. When Millen was finally fired by the overly loyal and scenile William Clay Ford, LeWand was promoted to President and Mayhew to GM. Initially I agreed with the majority of Lions fans that it was a mistake but we were obviously wrong. Mayhew and LeWand have done a very good job bringing talent into Detroit. Reports are that Wis is the Head Coach to be and I'll say that team has a very bright future.

Point is, I was very much against Gaine but J David reminded me about Mayhew and he's right. Give Gaine a shot. My biggest beef other than blowing draft picks was Ireland is an asshole from top to bottom. Gaine has a pleasant personality that actually gets along with people. Where Ireland can turn people against the organization Gaine can work with them.

Gaine has had several interviews around the league and is well liked and respected. Is Ireland?

Well when Tannehill is in his 8th year and plays a last place schedule...against a bunch of have nots. Then I would expect him to put up some good numbers. What you Pennington fluff boys gloss over is, the inability of Pennington to matter that season when he played a TOP 10 defense. That playoff game was something to watch. The defense in spite of Pennington kept MIA in that game.

You Pennington people love your stats. But he was sub par against TOP defenses his whole career. Dinking and dunking might be something you and others can appreciate. But frankly, I'm glad he is back in NY tutoring Sanchez or Geno, whomever the flavor of the month is.

Dinking and dunking is way underappreciated. A ball control offense is a successful offense, whether it's runs up the middle or swing passes. Pennington parlayed his weak arm and dinks and dunks into runner-up for NFL MVP in 2008. Arm strength in contrast, is overrated, as we have seen this year when a QB with the league's weakest arm had the greatest season in NFL history.

This is the perfect year to give it to Gaine. We are obviously keeping Philbin and not cleaning house. Brian allows you to keep all the info that has been gathered already. If we do not promote him, he will soon bolt for another team. If we promote him and he succeeds, great. If we promote him and he fails, we totally clean house of everyone and start over with a clean slate.

Am I the only one who sees JP in a thread title and still thinks of Joey Porter? lol

Good one, they should do it now it shows continuity and patience, like you said doesn't work make a change.
Ireland's picks have the least number of snaps of any team, you just lost 25% of their cheap contract, this has the potential to hurt the team down the line and yet no change.
