PFT Power Rankings - Dolphins at #31

:sidelol:

An 8-8 team that lost a defensive backup for 4 games and its starting center for a few weeks is now the 31st worst team in the NFL?

After the Browns just lost their best offensive player for the season and the Jags are still the Jags? I'm not even going to argue that Miami should be 10 or even 5 spots higher, but how on earth do you rank them below teams like that? I'm dying of laughter.

The shyster is at it again.

Not the 31st worst team, the 2nd worst team.

I've seen other "polls" that had us ranked around 20 - 23....which seemed about right to me.

While my outlook on this season isn't exactly optimistic, this is one of a few reasons why I don't visit PFT anymore.

I think 12-15 is being a homer, that's not to say they can't end up there but to say they are now or say you expect them to be there is being a homer. anything can happen in this league, good teams get bad and bad teams get good seemingly overnight but while you have talent you have major questions at HC, QB, OL. they could all turn out positive and you make the playoffs but it's more likely they all won't turn out positive and you could struggle.

I have been through this cycle of losing before, it's hard to break.

:bobdole: Well **** me sideways ...

Dammit, why to people occasionally have to type things that make me more-or-less (I won't say agree :chuckle:) condone your responses as being acceptable?!?

ARRGH!!! That's frigging TWICE in one month. :bobdole:

I'm logging off & going back to my 30-pack (already in progress) ... Something is very wrong in the universe.

I know the national media doesn't like us, but I'm still surprised. Anything less than 7-9 would shock me, and I really think we are looking at a 8-8 to 10-6 type season.
I can see us winning even a few less if Philbin loses the team. I can also see us winning 9 if Lazor turns out to be a genius. It can really go either way this year. Recent history tells me it will not go well, but I'm banking on Lazor, and on desperation causing Philbin to get tougher on his players.

Florio apparently is as good a prognosticator as he was an ambulance chaser.

Legit power ratings are math based. I've had to compile them on numerous sports for decades. It can be a pain in the butt considering the time expenditure. But it often leads to clarity. In golf, for example, the results often don't match the subjective version.

The newfangled media likes to apply the term power rating to nothing more than bar stool subjective blather. The word power is used to feign legitimacy. It's hilarious when huge changes occur, like a team dropped from 2nd to 7th based on one result. Actual power ratings don't work that way.

Everything important in the Dolphins' recent resume, like point differential and YPPA Differential, suggests a middle of the road team.

That midsection is vast in the NFL, BTW. That was one of my breakthroughs as a sports bettor. I'll never forget when I did the research and discovered it. It was spring 1984 and I had just left a Jack in the Box in Montebello, CA, not far east of Los Angeles on the Pomona Freeway. Contrary to conventional wisdom, only 4-6 teams in the NFL every year deserve special treatment. I labeled them Cream. The rest of the lot can be tossed together. I called them Crowd. Once I started taking points when Crowd teams played each other and only gave points with Cream teams, the winning percentage soared and second guessing was all but gone. It still holds up to this day but I've made some adjustments due to situational factors. Don't give points with Crowd teams, particularly -4 or above.

Yeah but those arent power ratings, they`re power rankings.... Basically stupid opinions without any real backing. Power ratings actually enable you to build a rule of thumb starting betting line, power rankings are just good to generate traffic on fan sites such as this one...

Here's the thing. At this time of the year nearly every fan can come up with reasons why their teams will make the playoffs and reasons why they won't. The difference between going 6-10 and 10-6 may be a few key injuries. That's how close the NFL is talent-wise.

In particular, the AFC East is one of the more intriguing divisions. The Patriots are still the team to beat, but Tom Brady didn't look like Tom Brady in long stretches last year and missed some wide open receivers in the AFC Championship game. I know quarterbacks miss receivers, but this just didn't happen for Brady in the past. Not in big games, anyway. So what am I saying? For the first time in a long-time New England might not win the division.

So who wins it if not the Patriots? The Dolphins seem to be ahead of Buffalo and New York in terms of quarterback play and that's huge. That said, the Jets went 8-8 with a rookie quarterback who was mostly pretty bad last year. They've added some talent on offense, have one of the game's best defensive lines and a coach that has gotten them to two AFC Championship games in recent years. The Bills have one of the best defensive lines in football, maybe top five even. They have a young quarterback with potential, perhaps the best wide receiver in the division in Sammy Watkins (although a rookie) and a nice talent at running back in CJ Spiller.

It will likely come down to who progresses more at qb this year between Tannehill, Smith and Manuel. The Jets also have a wildcard in Michael Vick.

31st?

We beat the pats, Pitt, cleveland, SD, jets, cincy, tenn, and one other team I can't remember now. Lost to Balt in ot, lost to car on last drive, lost to buff late in game. We are prob 20th-24th best team in nfl.

Designed to get clicks and they achieved the goal

Still ridiculous tho

I don't usually let the biased media reporting bother me, but that ranking is flat out ridiculous. I have the Fins at around the 18-20 range myself, but I guess everyone has their own idea of how the rankings line up. The bottom line is if we come out the gate strong and wear New England out in the Miami heat all of the haters either shut up or scramble to make excuses. That's the sound I always enjoy:dolphins:

PFT's hate for Miami is just incredible
