A league source tells PFT that the Dolphins are insisting on the inclusion of offset language in quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s contract.

Per the source, the team’s insistence is believed to be coming from V.P. of administration Dawn Aponte, who once worked for the league’s management council. It’s believed that teams are pushing for offset language at the specific direction of the NFL’s governing body.
As to Tannehill, the potential drawing of battle lines regarding the offset issue could be intertwined with reports that Tannehill is third on the depth chart. If Tannehill isn’t in line to start right away, the Dolphins can hold firm. If Tannehill is going to be playing, then the Dolphins need to give in so that they can get Tannehill in to camp.

Okayy......Isn't it in Tannelhill best interest to report to camp no matter what? Especially if he's not really needed at this time(3rd string=Very Little Leverage)

So let me get this straight offset language = prenuptial agreement basically?

The contractual risk is already reduced enough, sign the kid and get him into camp so he can take reps and learn.

if luck and griffin don't have it in their deals than tannehill shouldn't either and miami needs to get this done.

No!

It's in Tannehill's best interest to negotiate the best contract that will pay him the most guaranteed money up front so that he can provide for his family.

Didn't Dawn Aponte screw up a bunch of contracts in Cleveland that put them in salary cap hell?

She also cut Joey Portor....twice. The league rejected the first cut because she didnt follow cap protocol.

We are talking about such a small amount of money - basically if Tannehill gets cut by the time his contract runs out in 4 years, and another team picks him up, his new salary can be deducted from the guaranteed money Miami might still owe him. Thats what all this "offset language" is about. It trivial imo and Miami should just sign him without that language.

First of all I have a hard time understanding that they have a source that knows first hand about the contract negotiations. However if true I think we need to get him in & signed I dont think we need anymore bad press especially since Griffin & Luck didn't have it included. Just my opinion.

This is what kept Luck and Griffin from signing before. They eventually caved in and accepted it.

Griffin and Luck didn't cave, their teams caved, but I get what you are saying. This is really interesting and has a chance to get nasty. Luck and Griffin are obviously much more likely to still be on their team's roster in 4 years than RT. I believe RT is the future and will work out and be on our roster also, but I see what the team sees. It IS possible that he doesn't mature into the player they hope he becomes, he is MUCH less proven than the other top 10 picks. However if this becomes a lasting longterm issue it will show that the fins WERE reaching when they made the pick.

I really don't see where the team has ANY leverage in this dispute. They have already told RT that he probably isn't going to be the week one starter, so what has he got to lose?? If he misses part of TC it will help his side more, and allow him the "out" of saying "well I didn't get all of TC" as the reason that he isn't starting.

I see the fins caving on this, and I see it happening BEFORE the first episode of Hard Knocks. I don't see how they wouldn't get the short end of any press on this situation. It is very interesting however.
