Philbin: Coach of the Year?

I think he should be considered but Riverboat Ron will most likely receive the award and is very deserving of it.

well then maybe we should take Mike Shula away from him and see how he does next year.

I dont care one way or the other if Joe Philbin gets COY.

Its an overblown award for coaches who will probly end up looking weaker then next year because cirucumstances that you got under control with a good team and a weak schedule got you there....now you deal with tough schedule. and you still cant beat the Broncos.

Coach of the year based on keeping the team going during bullygate would not be my vote. I'd vote for a team's coach that did not have to fix a locker room. I respect what he is doing however. Go Joe!

At this point it should be Pete Carroll. I don't understand this nonsense about giving coach of the year to a guy who won a few more games than expected with a lower tier team. Invariably they flatten out or regress a year later and you ask how the heck he got it? Normally it's simply winning an unusual percentage of tight games. IMO, running the table, or very close to it, carries the highest burden and deserves the award.

I will say that Andy Reid kept a team unbeaten deep into the season with a quarterback averaging 6 yards per attempt. I've never seen that before.

Turnover differential and defense, both of which have eroded since then.

I told you to bet against them a while back based on the randomness of turnovers. ;)

I don't know how you could overlook Andy Reid. Taking KC from dead last has been an outstanding achievement. I'm not convinced that Rivera is suddenly great. He's had a lot of luck to be narrowly winning so many games.
I like your nomination over every other one. I totally forgot about Reid.

No. Just no. We've lost too many games that we should have won. (Bills , Bucs, Panthers and Ravens).

Don't forget the Pats game, which was just like the Carolina loss. When your team is completely dominating an opponent at half-time but you fail to score in the second half and lose, you have no business being considered for Coach Of The Year. When your o-line is on pace to give up a record number of sacks and you make NO changes until being coerced by the owner, you have no business being a Head Coach!

If I were Ross, the only way I'd consider keeping Philbin is if:

1. The team makes the playoffs.
2. Joe replaces Sherman.
3. Joe must change his offensive system; he places too much emphasis on short timing routes and neglected the o-line and running game. He needs to bring in a new OC who knows the importance of good o-line play, a consistent running game, and how to get the most out of Tannehill/Wallace and the deep ball.

However, I think that Miami has a better chance of making the playoffs than of Philbin firing his mentor or changing his offensive philosophy.

A what if...

It was originally suggested by Herm Edwards...

Lets say the Dolphins win out, finish 10 - 6 and make the playoffs...should Philbin be considered for coach of the year?

He would have manage to get his team in the playoffs despite losing his starting TE, number 3 WR, two starting lineman, starting CB and the teams most accomplished defensive player for part of the season all while keeping his team focused during this season biggest (while overblown) scandal. The team has had to deal with considerable media scrutiny and an extensive investigation by the NFL.

I will admit that I was ready to move on from Philbin several weeks ago, but this team keeps fighting despite the all they have experienced...if they do indeed win out and make the playoffs then he should at least be considered ( though Andy Reed will most likely get the honor).

You want to crown his ass, then crown his ass!

Sorry my inner Denny Green just came out.

Let's just let it play out. This team could go either way at this point. The losses in certain wins vs Tampa, Buffalo, Baltimore and Patriots should be enough to help you see we haven't gotten what we could have out of this team.

Even if we win our last 4 games and go 10-6, a huge part of our problems in the first 11 games has been piss poor coaching - either with getting guys fired up (Bucs game), managing personnel better (all the time), or half time adjustments (at least half our games).

A lot of our losses can be based solely on getting out-coached... so even if we win out, it will definitely give me a much more optimistic outlook towards Philbin, but doesn't change the first 11 games.
