Philbin to speak tomorrow at combine

The whole thing basically was "I ****ed up, I did what my players wanted and it backfired on me" or that's how I read it. And really, that's all he can say. He's getting destroyed because the team voted Richie to the leadership council and he didn't overturn them.

Honestly I just don''t know what people wanted to Joe to say. All he can say is "I have to make sure it doesn't happen"

He's getting destroyed because he fumbled the ball, big time, and the Dolphins became even more of a national joke as a result. In my opinion he's just not that good of a coach- a so-called OL expert, although that hardly seems to have benefit us- who lacks charisma and by many accounts he's not very good with the x' and o's strategies of the game at all. He had zero previous head coaching experience, and in my opinion that shows, a better and more experienced head coach would not have been completely oblivious to what was going on in the locker room, practice field and elsewhere.

Take all of that, wrap it in a dish rag personality and then add to it the Dawn Aponte factor, which made Philbin look like even more of a weenie, and you have quite a package there. Philbin might be a nice guy, might not be, I don't know. But all of these factors combine to make me think that this is not the HC that I want for the Dolphins. Dumping Ireland was excellent, but getting rid of him and Philbin would have been better imo. Philbin apologizing and saying that he'll make sure it doesn't happen again doesn't cut it. Lucky for Philbin that Ross seems to be a big fan of his, otherwise he probably would have been canned based on performance and the scandal/embarrassment of the franchise. Also, I never found him to be an inspiring HC at all, but the last two games of the season spoke volumes about Philbin's inability to motivate a football team. Philbin is better suited to be an assistan coach or maybe an organizational expert, but imo he just doesn;t have what it takes to be a good head coach. Poor selection from day one. If he were a natural head coach, a natural leader, it wouldn't have taken him 30 years to get his first head coaching job in the first place.

'Some wonder why Philbin already isn’t being held accountable moving backward. Even if he didn’t know about the harassment of Jonathan Martin and others (some wonder whether that’s true), Philbin’s failure to know speaks to a level of incompetence that could disqualify him from being an NFL head coach."

I can understand the opinion some have that Joe should not be held accountable at all what I cannot understand is how some cannot see the other side of the argument where he should bear some responsibility. And I really hate the Belichek and Sean Payton have been bad too arguments. It reminds me of my students who always point out the behavior of others to persuade me to excuse their irresponsible behavior.

This is so ridiculous.

Philbin treated his players like adults and gave them freedom. Individuals who should act professional and accountable. Instead he got a bunch of 10 year olds who don't know how to act professional. I didn't know the position of head coach included babysitting men in their 20s and 30s.

a hell of a lot of people on here who don't seem to understand a head coach in the nfls responsibilities...

Never heard that, in fact I have read the opposite.

No. The only people that are arguing from that side are people that has no clue as to how this this is structured. I played D1 football and the COACHES let alont he HC only came into the lockeroom on game day. If he wanted you or needed you he would call to the lockeroom to the trainer of equipment staff to get you. I played in the NLF for a very short time and in that time I NEVER saw the HC in the locker room. If we (players) are in the lockeroom that means it is our time. There is nothing going on or we were getting ready for meetings or practice. The coaches had no reason to enter the locker room. The HC relies on the players and other staff that is in there to tell him there is a problem. SINCE noone thought there was a problem there was nothing to tell the HC.

So let me be clear again. NO there was no way for Philbin to know.

You would think Philbin ate a live puppy when he was up at the podium.

If he had shown himself to be anything beyond an average coach since he's been here this wouldn't be a big deal. Once/If he proves that he is more than an average coach this year this will be forgotten.

I see the bitching and moaning from the media and some fans is already in full force for what Philbin said this morning. No matter what he said people were going to rip him.

He got up in front of the media and addressed them head on, took responsibility and discussed that it won't happen again under his watch. He did the right thing today, but for some that will never be enough.

Because some internet fanboys equate pessimism w/ intellelect and think a certain video game makes them omniscient about the game.

p.s. Joe's PC occurred during my morning commute and I will watch it when I get home tonight.

Philbins glaring fault is that he truly isn't a players coach.

If Martin felt like he could've spoken to him about this, all of this never would've happened.

Knows as much as Mando, is more respected by the players than Mando (as Hartline's mocking of AS during his re-signing presser underscored), and is demonstrably about 30-IQ pts smarter - so if it comes down to the 2 of them, Dan's take should be the one more seriously considered.

Dan has a sense of humor.

Anyone wants to read shoddy questionable journalism? Read a Dick Harmon article (Deseret news here in SLC) on byu football.

Martin still created this situation.

He did. Martin should've been somewhat responsible for the outcome of his situation. He didn't need to face Incognito/Pouncey/Jerry. All he had to do was talk to someone within the organization.

For a sport that preaches being a man. Martin did the least manly/responsible thing possible.

I said in another thread. This smells like Martin's parents. Lawyer loves to sue.

Martin will never take blame for anything here. The sad thing is everytime a former player brings this point to the media it is washed and swept under the rug. All Martin had to do was just say something to anybody!!!!
