Philip Merling on the Trade Block

Cumberland is our 2nd TE in two tight end sets.......he's not going anywhere. He's gonna make our offense fun to watch this year......:)

Keith Zinger is better you don't need Cumberland :D

we have Fasano and Epps, the shelves are bare in the TE position here.

what about charles clay he is/was a TE slash FB RB in college how are we going to use him ? or are we just going to release him ?

I don't think he's doing much so far. I've tried to keep an eye out for him during pre-season and only noticed him in the play once. Course I've watched each game one time. Someone that's re-watched it just looking for TE might find out what he is up to.

Fasano has done nothing but drop passes or fumble away the few catches he does make. He only had one good year here, the rest have been nothing to write home about. At best Fasano is a backup TE which unfortunately we have as a starter here. In other words Fasano STINKS!

Lolol at Merling bringing back a "quality tight end." Who would trade a good player for a guy that hasn't really done anything at all besides beat up women and get injured?

I didnt know Bennett was a woman beater too

Clay is an H-back/Fullback type player... it's basically a hybrid position on offense in the same vein the "star" or "rover" is a hybrid position on defense.

Clay doesn't have the skillset, nor is he developed enough in the blocking department to play in-line on the LOS as a true tight end.... he has to play off-set from the LOS in an H-back role to be effective.

An H-back basically serves as an outlet receiver more than a true tight end. It's all about how you function from the line of scrimmage and go from there.

The Jets will do good to hang on to that kid... he's an incredibly explosive athlete. In fact, as far as pure athletic ability and explosiveness, I think he's in the elite category of NFL tight ends.... he's just a little raw around the edges right now.

I was fairly high on him coming out of Illinois because he's the type of "rocked up" wide receiver playing tight end that I tend to like... and the type of player that Miami goes out of their way to avoid.

Cumberland played tight end and wide receiver at Illinois... I remember watching game film of him playing wide receiver against USC in the Rose Bowl a couple years ago and being extremely impressed with his versatility and explosiveness as an athlete.

He's in the Jermichael Finley mold as far as TE's go... the type of guy you can split out wide and operate in the slot. Get him isolated on a corner, safety, or linebacker 1-on-1... a player like that creates a favorable mismatch for your offense against any of the three.

I wished Miami would've drafted him instead of Spitzler or whoever they ended up taking with one of those later round picks...

Fasano is a great blocker, but he's fairly slow. He's got pretty dependable hands, though. We need a play maker at TE, though, with the way our offense is set up. I'm a big of bringing in Carlson but that's assuming he's healthy which is a large assumption

Merling is good, but obviously with the depth, he's expendable. I'd love to get John Carlson in here.

No he's not. He sucks. He would probably be cut this year. They kept him the last couple years because of "hope" and the position he was drafted at...but he is a flat out bust!

Merling is terrible, and he's lazy... among other things.

I'll be suprised if Miami can get a quality TE straight up in a trade for Merling, but I'd love to see if Baltimore would be willing to trade Ed Dickson. I'd also like to see the Jets cut Jeff Cumberland and Miami scoop him up. That's a guy Jeff Ireland needs to keep an eye on...

i thought baltimore turned over the #1 job to dickson...you thinking they'd rather ride with pitta since he's been getting a lot of run this preseason??? i think they keep em both

If Parcells were here he would have traded for John Carlson already....white TE from Notre Dame....he would have been drooling.

Forget Merling for a second, if you can get ANYTHING of value for him in a trade, get it and don't look back....

The point is, I think there's subject to be a TE cut from one of these other teams, or a guy they'll try to stash on the practice squad that could help Miami. Again, Jeff Cumberland is a guy I've always liked since he came out of college...

You might be able to find a way to get Virgil Green or Julius Thomas from Denver just going off the top of my head...

not likely...he's running with the ones in a lot of packages...he's impressed

You know I've always thought Dickson was the better prospect and player to begin with, but it's pretty close with him and Pitta.

My point was I'd take either one of them for Merling, but if I had my choice I'd want Dickson. My thinking has nothing to do with which one starts, because I don't think Ozzie is going to get rid of either one of them for Merling... My thinking is that I'd go to the point of embarrassing myself on the phone with Ozzie in an attempt to rid myself of Merling and acquire Dickson....

I'd come up with packages that include Merling, perhaps even throw in another player or two somewhere, and/or draft picks just to keep him on the line...

..but none of it is happening regardless.
