Well, I'm glad you waited a day before posting. I wish more people would. People tend to be all up in arms immediately following a loss.
Most people aren't thinking clearly in the off-season....much less immediately following a loss. It's good to walk away, breathe, collect your thoughts, and make clear-headed assessments about the team.
And I love how you've squashed the "Henne Haters" nonsense. It's like I've said all along, guys like you and I aren't "Henne Haters", we're just dudes who demand a lot more from guys in leadership positions. You play like ****, I'm gonna let you know about it. You play as well as you did last night, I'll be the first one to congratulate you. Nolan Carroll played like a dick biscuit last night. Am I a "Carroll Crusher?" No. Just a guy who points out the fact that Carroll played like ****.
I'm a fan of the Miami Dolphins. I am NOT a "player fan" or "wear my jersey to dinner" guy.
Eh, I probably shouldn't respond to this thread but I've got to take issue with this. Posters like you and WV (and many others) weren't just saying that Henne played like **** against opponent X. You were saying he was ****
as a player. You were making a final evaluation. You were -- by extension -- advocating a course of action personnel-wise.
To say now that all you were looking for was a certain standard of play and if he meets it you're happy and if he doesn't you're unhappy is, in my view, somewhat simplistic. A guy can play well for a time and be **** as a player. And a guy can play like **** and still have talent that should be nurtured.
Anybody can look at someone who's playing well and say that they're playing well, just as anyone can look at someone can look at someone who's playing poorly and say that they're playing poorly. The trick of the personnel business is telling the truly talented from the also rans and being able to look at a player who's struggling, see
why they're struggling, and be able to tell whether it's worth the effort to try and put them in a position to succeed.
So my point is that if you're going to use the standard I've highlighted above and you're not going to be making any far reaching statements about how player X blows and should be run out of town or player X has talent and should stay, then fine.
But forgive me if I'm wrong -- and if I'm unfairly characterizing what you've been saying around here I sincerely apologize, but I know I'm speaking accurately as to the feelings of others -- but that's not what you were doing. You saw him play. You judged that play on an overall basis. You judged that he had no future.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not spiking the ball and declaring victory on him by any means. AT ALL. But there's been a lot of **** directed at people who thought Henne had ability and could thrive under different coaching and a different scheme. And I think we all know that if this season turns out to be an utter disaster that the people who said that and advocated for him will be ridiculed (either directly or by proxy) just as those who thought John Beck was going to turn into a good player and defended
him were ridiculed.
Now, I'm not the vindictive sort. And I don't approve of hazing (unless it's junc). But to a certain extent what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I've been wrong about plenty of things and like anybody else I don't enjoy having it pointed out, but the fact of the matter is that this is a message board and the currency of the realm is opinions. And as long as that's true I think we should all be held accountable for those opinions. If Henne turns into a good quarterback then people who said he was an awful hunk of **** who should be dropped into the nearest open sewer should at least admit (if to no one but themselves) that they were wrong about him, not hide behind some self-congratulatory banner of "high standards." And if the other night turns out to be an apparition rather than a trend then those who advocated for him should admit that they were wrong.
You can believe that I will.
