Is Grier a genius or a dumbass?

I will again say this, I am not high on Patrick Paul, but I respect that the Fins have taken the approach of going high ceiling low floor this year. We have never been a risk taking franchise in the draft.

I think the draft has proven that the team feels the bigger issue late in the year was the depth behind our stars.
Yes spot on. OL got depleted, edge rushers down, RB and WR room gassed and banged up. So, we got two edge rushers, two WR’s, another SEC productive speed RB and a 2nd round OT.

In a draft we had 6 picks I’m not sure why so much complaining, at least with what positions we targeted. Of course time will tell if they are any good or not but the approach was sound.

I don't know how anyone could wax on passionately either way seeing as any judgment depends upon the production of those picks in the NFL & as we have yet to see that... who the fk knows?

I, too, thought it was imperative to hit on 2 solid starters with the 1st 2 picks. If I'm to buy in to conjecture, we selected 2 projects. For all we REALLY know, we have two pro-bowlers. Do I like my odds? No. But it's all to kill boredom till the hitting starts.
Bingo.

We needed starters, we got projects. A pass rush only specialist and a raw OT (whom I like btw.)

We also traded a 3rd round pick for a RB that does the same thing as all the RBs on our roster (hopefully better in pass pro.)

WRs, great. Fine players, but who is the 3 down player? These guys will hardly see the field, and if they do, it wont matter because Tua only throws to Hill and Waddle.

I dont even give a **** about being a pro bowl player. Where is my ****ing starter? Where is my 3 down defender?

Tell my WHY this team will be better than last year. I HOPE we are, but right now I see a worse roster with BIGGER holes.

Grier isnt horrible, ive defended him for several years now, but DAMN, he sure doesnt look like a genius either.

Doubling down on speed is putting us into the fast track for 3rd place in the AFC East.

Prove me wrong Dolphins.

Ahhh......

Now you are moving the goalposts from your original query to a subjective analysis.

Guard is not considered a long term "value" position for early picks by a majority of knowledgeable football ppl. Certainly not rd1, and apparently not those in power with the team.

While there were some who stated they disagreed, or just didn't care, the impression I got from the rank and file here was they preferred a Tackle that could play Guard his first year, then transition to LT next. That's fine but not an easy ask, as the two positions for high quality players are, generally, different body types.

They instead took a high ceiling, big, agile LT in rd 2, a position considered more valuable by most.

I don't know if they are done with IOL, or if they bring in another FA post draft when it doesn't affect comp picks, but that is still an option. It's actually probably a better option than penciling a day 3 rookie selection as a starter
Some posts here make me want to jerk the damn wheel into a bridge abutment. We could sign Risner and Van Roten both on Wednesday and the whining negative nellies would still complain about something.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Anyone in this thread mentioning Chris Grier in the same post as “the past 20 or 25 years” isn’t paying attention or is just bat**** crazy.

Gents, 25 years ago was 1999. The Dolphins owner and GM in 1999...are both deceased. Chris Grier was a scout. For the Patriots. You could probably blame everything that went wrong in 1999 on Chris Grier, if you were ******* insane. In fact, I can only find one person who worked for the Dolphins in 1999 who also works for the Dolphins today.

It's Dan Marino. Let's not go there.

For the 15 years after that, Grier was part of the Dolphins scouting department - from 2007 - 2015, he was the head of the scouting department. Does anyone remember the fun "power struggles" during those years? Those internal battles between Dawn Aponte, Jeff Ireland and Joe Philbin to see who was really in charge of the team? You could probably blame all of that and what went wrong on Chris Grier, if you were ******* insane.

Chris Grier was named GM in 2016. VP and head of Football Operations was Mike Tannenbaum. New Head Coach was Adam Gase. Now, can you blame Chris Grier for part of what happened from 2016-2018 on Grier? Sure. But you and I both know that Tannenbaum had his big, fat, Antichrist New York head in that decision making process. If you remember (or research) correctly, however, the person who had contractual control over personnel during those three years? Was Adam ******* Gase.

2019-present? Go ahead and rip away - that's all on Grier. And do it with this in mind: Grier has flat-out stated that he tried to give his HC as much of what he wants as possible. Remember Flores clapping and cheering with the Igbinoghene and Raekwon Davis picks?

For what it's worth, I picked "somewhere in the middle." If you want to label me a Grier apologist, go ahead. But if you do that, and don't want me ripping back into your opinion, maybe don't start by blaming him for the past couple decades.
Anthony Hunt and Adam Engroff, the current Co-Directors of Player Personnel were with the Dolphins then. Also Asst Trainer. Troy Maurer was here. He's been with the team much longer than the current head trainer. Hunt and Maurer go back to Shula and Engroff goes back to Jimmy. Engroff was just the West Coast area scout then.
Joe Cimino the equipment manager has been with the team for 30 years and his assistant Charlie Theile has been with the team 29 years.
One more, Dorie Grogan has been with the team since 1996 and is currently vice president of corporate events. She was first hired as director of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders.

THIS IS ALL DORIE’S FAULT!

I think Chop will play a lot, and I see hum being effective early. I think the defense will feel faster, more explosive, and chaotic when he's on the field, and while they'll ease him in somewhat, I expect Weaver to want him on the field as much as possible.

Paul obviously won't play unless there's an injury or in 6 OL packages, and he'd have to make some strides for Miami to want to get him out there. In the 2nd, you're not going to get an OT who checks the physical boxes to be high-level and has the polish to play early. If he doesn't develop, it's obviously a wasted pick, but character + desire to improve + elite physical tools = a good bet imo. Also, he played well in Houston. He just played well in spite of his very sloppy technique.

Wright will see a lot of time and touches imo. His blocking ability makes it easy to get him on the field.

Malik Washington is the 3rd best WR on the team, and Tahj is probably the 4th. Imo both are Day 2 picks in 8/10 drafts - maybe very early Day 3 for Tahj, but guys who can really play WR and have a nuanced feel and understanding of the position don't typically fall like that - no matter how short or slight they are.

I think Paul is the only guy who isn't ready to contribute in some fashion early, and who knows how quickly he develops.

I hope you're right bro.

Im ok with being patient with Paul. We needed a plan for Armstead's replacement and like you said, you'd be hard pressed to find a starter at OT in round 2. That said, Lamm will need to stay healthy because we will be lucky if Armstead graces us with his presence for more than 8 games. The good news is that since Armstead is too special to practice with his teammates Paul will get a lot of quality reps.

Last year I felt Achane was a gadget player and I got attacked. People told us he was a 3 down back. Now we grabbed ANOTHER RB with the promise he can be a 3 down back. (Again, I like Wright) So I feel like we wasted a pick on Achane last year, or wasted a pick on Wright this year. Committee is fine and dandy, but we have gaping holes on other squads, why keep bolstering these areas?

Leading us to WR. I dont mind the players, but fail to see them supplanting Berrios or Craycraft or both. Which one is the big bodied possession receiver? We keep doubling down on smurfs.....why? Speed? I felt Berrios got open often enough, Tua just never threw it to him. Unless we have drastic changes to the offense, I dont see anyone other than Hill and Waddle getting targets.

We got stomped in several games last year because we were not as physical as our competition. Where is our physicality? A pass rusher that doesnt get his hands on anyone? A RB that runs outside zone but struggles between the tackles? Another WR that will get swallowed up by defenses?

I hope to God you're right bro, but Im bracing myself for a disaster this year.

Joe Cimino should be promoted to GM next. After Hard Knocks I’m all in on him 😝

Yeah I don’t understand all the 5’8 and 5’9” WR picks.

Wouldn't you rather be the one that's wrong, because that would mean we had a good draft and a better team? Or would you rather be right and the team be worse bc the draft picks sucked?
For me I want the team to compete for a title. That means winning divisions and playoff games. Grier has been GM since 2016 and we haven’t won a playoff game yet. So I said “dumbass”.

Outside of Christian McCaffrey, who is a 3-down back these days? I don't think that's what Miami, or most teams, are really looking for. Would you rather one guy take 15-25 carries and average 4.5 YPC or two guys split those touches and average 5.5+ YPC? I would also say that the vast majority of Wright's carries were inside the tackles - very little outside stuff at Tennessee.

I disagree about Malik Washington failing to supplant Berrios and Cracraft. I think he's already better than both, and it's just a matter of him getting acclimated. He's also very physical with the ball in his hands.

But, with regard to overall physicality, I agree it's still a major question for the team.
