Primary needs for 2014

Dont know what team you were watching...gibson was the best receiver on this team until he got hurt...

The best receiver on this team isn't saying much. On a Superbowl contending team Gibson is a solid #3 or 4 receiver. He is not a #1. Neither is Wallace, Hartline or anyone else that is currently on the team. Even if you are happy with Gibson, Hartline and Wallace you have to consider that Gibson will be coming back from a knee injury while Hartline could be as well. So are you happy with your depth behind those 3 being Rishard Matthews and Marlon Moore? Were you impressed with those 2 guys and their drops against the Jets?

The goal is to build a team that can dominate teams like the Broncos, Patriots, Bengals, Seahawks, Panthers, 49ers, Saints and Colts. First priority is to fix the O-line and at least find someone to replace Wheeler. I don't care how much he is supposed to be making, if you want to field a winning team he is not one of your starting LBs. Then you need to find a true #1 receiver. You need a Demaryius Thomas , AJ Green, Julio Jones type player. Tannehill is not Brady or Brees who can still win on a consistent basis with average receivers. You need you give Tannehill as many quality weapons as possible. You
don't have to overpay for every player in free agency if you have a competent GM with a good scouting staff.

Also on defense you need to be able to dominate the line of scrimmage and put pressure on the opposing QB. Both Starks and Soliai could be gone so you need someone stout to put on your line next to Odrick. Wake has had a down year by his standards, Vernon tailed off towards the end of the year and Jordan needs to prove that he can be an every down player. So finding another stud DE is still a priority. You can't fix every hole on this team in one year. You can however fix enough to make this a legit playoff contender.

OT, OG, LB, DT, RB, WR, TE, S, CB, DE & KR/PR.

OL: Pouncey is the only above average talent they have. Brenner may be worth developing. Clabo and Mckinnie have seen their better days. Jerry is just another wasted draft pick. Dallas Thomas couldn't even break into the starting lineup on a terrible line. Same can be said about Watkins. Incognito is gone. Garner will always be a backup.

LB: Wheeler and Ellerbe turned out to be terrible signings. They were the biggest liabilities on defense and need to be replaced. Also there is no depth here. Jenkins didn't show much at all.

DT: I would let Starks walk and try to sign Soliai to a reasonable contract. Odrick had a good year but they need to find a young stud to put next to him.

RB: They need to find a good veteran back that can pick up the tough yards and that can also block.

WR: The Dolphins need a #1 WR. A big physical guy who can make the tough catches and break tackles. They need a true play maker. Wallace is a good complimentary type speed receiver. Hartline would be an excellent #3 and Gibson a good #4. Not having a true #1 and the lack of quality depth at WR hurt the offense this year.

TE: Clay had a good year but they still need a big bodied TE. Egnew and Sims did not show enough.

S: Jones had a bad year after getting his big payday and Clemons is inconsistent. Also there is no good depth here. Don Jones is a special teams only guy and Jimmy Wilson will always be a liability when he is on the field.

CB: Grimes needs to be re-signed. Patterson can't be counted on so I wouldn't offer him more than an incentive based contract. Carroll is a #4 corner at best. Taylor didn't show much and Davis was exposed when he was on the field.

DE: Wake is getting up there and he disappeared towards the end of the season. Vernon is a decent player but he also disappeared too often especially in the last two games. Jordan, we didn't get to see enough of him. Shelby didn't do much at all.

PR/KR: Thigpen was a huge disappointment this season. I see no reason to bring him back next year. At least bring in some competition.

Just have to hope that the Dolphins hire a competent GM. They won't be able to fill all of those holes this off-season but a good GM will be able to fill most of them. The Goal for 2014 is to fight for the division and make the playoffs. 2015 should be the year to hope to go deep into the playoffs.

I agree with almost all of your assessment...but the one thing that I am not so sure of is the LB's...I almost think that the problems are more to do with the coach...They bring in 2 new guys who were pretty good the past few years with other teams and they come here and in one year they suck....You have two guys who where not that good here and leave and play for other teams and look like world beaters...just something to think about.. I think that has more to do with game planning....

I have never been really happy with the WRs but they were better this year then they had been the problem it we had zero running game and zero blocking ability if anyone blitzed...I still dont think we have a true #1 in the make of Megatron (1 in a million WR) or marshall but i think until you find that 1, we have good WRs (hopefully gibson can come back 100%)...the next question is even if we had the #1 WR could tannehill get him the ball...

now if you are going to look at the broncos, pats, seahawks, saints, and colts you also have to look at the top 5 QBs in the league that make their teams better...look at the pats and tell me they had more talent at WR than we did...i cant say they did, what they did have is one of the best QBs of all time and the perfect eveil coach to go with him that makes below average players look like superstars...brady willed that team to win...

u say tannehill cant win with average receivers, then that means you need to look for a QB who can...

on defense, well our linemen were supposed to be lane stuffers and the LBs were supposed to tackle...it didnt works so well...

The problem with Hester is brings no value other than that. I would rather free up a roster spot with a player that can plain the field as well, whether it is at DB or WR. Hester is for the most part strictly ST.

Isn't that what thigpen is? He's done nothing on offense that Hester can't do for us. Looks like an upgrade to me.

Hopefully we get to find out. If Ireland gets fired and the new GM decides to get rid of Philbin and his staff. Then we will see what a new Defensive coordinator can do with those two LBs . Hopefully they can shine in a different system, I just don't know. We have seen though that the run defense has gotten worse under Coyle.

Tannehill is not on that level yet. Still nothing wrong with trying to strengthen the team by adding a #1 receiver. If Tannehill improves under a different OC, works on his pocket presence and deep ball accuracy then having a Alpha receiver to go along with the group they already have could make the offense pretty deadly. Putting an above average offensive line in front of him is the first step though. That should help with the running game as well.

As far as the defense goes, most blame the linebackers but the guys who were supposed to be the strength on the D-Line got pushed around way too often. Starks and Soliai did not earn their contracts this year. I am guessing that Starks will be gone and they will attempt to re-sign Soliai. It all depends on who the Defensive coordinator is next year. I still think that DT will be one of their priorities.
