Smart teams do this all the time. Qb's get hurt a lot, spending a late pick on a backup makes sense. We are one of the very few teams that doesnt do this. Certainly a team would love for a late round guy to improve and be starting quality, but look at all the Qb's GreenBay drafted while Farve was there, they did it to have insurance incase in got hurt. Atlanta drafted a guy a year ago for the same reason, insurance incase Vick went down. Davey was drafted by New England also if Im not wrong. None of these guys were drafted to start, just to be around incase they are need to hold down the fort or if a career ending injury happened to one of the guys.
The Lucas example is a good one. Having a young guy familiar with your system and ready to play makes picking up cheap, weak vets like this up. We should have spent late round picks on Qbs ages ago. I think Wannestadt intentionally didnt take Qbs or pickup quality ones so that no one would be chanting for them to come in every time Fiedler threw and Int.
