Ramsey Question?

Brandon Shore handles all contract negotiations and writings. Grier doesn’t have a say on any contracts. He tells Shore the guy he wants and Shore negotiates. Shore negotiates with the player’s reps.
Yeah exactly - he literally ONLY handles the numbers. Hes not negotiating any numbers that are not put in front of him. Hes not negotiating a deal with players the GM doesn’t sign. If Miami decides we are gonna restructure Ramsey, then Shore gets involved.

Ramsay’s deal happens because of what the GM decides… then Brandon Shore comes in and within that little box of contract numbers he has to play with, puts the numbers together.

It’s a little surprising people think anything otherwise.

You said "he has no say".

"NO SAY"

Are you standing by that very specific statement?

Grier doesn’t have a say in player contracts.
So the GM has no say in offering new/improved contracts?
Season 4 Andy GIF by The Office

"Shore works directly with General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel on all aspects of football operations. He oversees football administration, team and training facility operations, video, football analytics, equipment, athletic training and team security. He also serves as the team's lead negotiator for player contracts, manages the salary cap and club compliance with the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, and acts as the organization's liaison on labor relations and league matters.
In addition, Shore oversees the club's human resources, information technology and business administration departments, as well as the Hard Rock Stadium grounds crew. He also leads the operations for South Florida Sod Farm, which is owned by the Dolphins and produces the natural grass fields for both Hard Rock Stadium and the Baptist Health Training Complex."

Chris Grier is the general manager of the Miami Dolphins, a title he's held since 2016, and oversees personnel and all football operations for the club. The 2024 campaign marks his 25th season with the franchise, rising from area scout to national scout, director of college scouting and general manager during that time.

That's a lot of things for one person to be responsible for. It must be tough to give each aspect the attention needed to operate smoothly. What does Garfinkel do?

Makes decisions on logos and uniforms. He must be the Team President in the NFL with the least amount of power over the product on the field and the front office. If he chooses to retire, I'd like to send in my resume.

"Tom Garfinkel serves as Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium and Managing Partner of the Formula 1® Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix. Since his hire in 2013, Garfinkel has led the business success of the Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium" He's making sure business is raking in as much $$$ as possible for Steve Ross.

That title would go to Stephen Jones of the Cowboys.

Very true. Old Jerry is the GM, President, Head of PR, and if they put a broom up his ass, the team janitor.

Let me correct myself, Garfinkel is the weakest Team President in regards to football operations whose father did not place him in the position

Maybe a wrong choice of words. Grier obviously wants players and tells shore who he wants. Then Shore negotiates contracts with the player’s agent. McD, Grier, and Shore all work together, but they all have independent responsibilities.

My point is, blaming Grier for contract costs and/or the cap isn’t putting blame on the right person.

Sorry, but I don't see how you can separate them as "independent responsibilities". There is a hierarchy of responsibility, but it's not independent. The procurement of players, the strategic moves to keep the team within the salary cap, and final decisions come from Grier. Shore supports Grier as far as the salary cap and contract negotiations are concerned, but the buck stops with Grier (as it should) when it comes to what personnel are on the field and the financial flexibility to make moves.

Do you really think Shore negotiated the deal with Ramsey without Grier knowing the current and future ramifications as to how it would affect the salary cap?

Grier reports to Ross

McD reports to Ross

Shore reports to Ross

Shore will update Grier on the cap and contracts, but he’s the lawyer and the accountant.. he’s in charge of those. Chris Grier got his degree in journalism.

If you are correct (and I severely doubt it), then it is no wonder this organization is so screwed up. To have a GM not involved in contract negotiations, taking into account the effects of contracts on his salary cap flexibility, etc., is absolutely ridiculous (if true).

I worked with the Fins in the late 90's. Bryan Wiedmeier was VP of Football Operations, he had Matt Thomas working for him (his "Shore"). To think Thomas didn't notify Wiedmeier what options with new contracts were and further for Wiedmeier not notifying JJ for final say would be ridiculous.

You’re 100% flat out wrong.

The Ramsey extension is 10000000000% on Chris Grier and literally not the guy not involved in actual football strategy.

There are few more incorrect opinions on this forum this week than this one.

Answer is simple, enough, put him on the shelf let him sit there with no activity till his contract runs out. Let him get rusty and the Dolphins learn how a valuable lesson about guaranteed contracts. It’s a win win :)
