RE-thinking Eugene Monroe & The OL?

lewans more a power scheme fit in my eyes...feet a lot like jake long similar lateral movements as well...can he play in a zone i'm sure he can but ideal i think he's power...poor mans jake long is what i see...looks more like an nfl right tackle to me feet wise

and b/t you are not gonna make someone more athletic by coaching em up... not taking a slug and making him into a dancing bear foot and movement skills wise...

Baltimore will make room to sign Monroe. As Hoops said they didn't give up 4th and a 5th round picks for a half year rental. I just don't see any way he hits the free agent market.

The Ravens will have better cap numbers in 2015 and 2016, and with the projected increase in cap, Monroe shouldn't be difficult to resign imo. He could sign a contract much like Wallace an Ellerbe signed with us last year - huge signing bonus up front and low base salary to minimize the fist year cap hit.

bingo...if need be they got that option

I do agree with everyone that Balt can sign Monroe but, I cannot see them tagging him for $11M. I do believe that he can get more in FA than what they will offer but, have no idea if he really likes being in Balt. The GM and HC saying that they were working on extending him two months ago, with no results, leads me to believe that he and his agent have not been happy with their offer.

Based on this, I think it's a coin toss n Monroe hitting FA, and am hoping it comes up Dolphins tails.

Athleticism: of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina.

I'm sure as **** not confused on the definition of athleticism. Athleticism pertains to an individual's physical capabilities. You're not being turned into a more physically gifted athlete through coaching, you're learning how to apply the athletic skills you already have in an effective manner. A natural athlete may have better technique because their body can easily adapt to new adjustments but their technique isn't making them more athletic. When you enter the NFL your physical tools are known commodities, with limited room for growth in most cases. Through improved technique you maximize that athleticism. If you don't get that fine, but you're mistaken. Hopefully SB can jump in and help me out.

I'll try. All NFL players are athletes but, not all are athletic. Some have the God given or genetic ability to do things others cannot. They can jump higher, have fluid motion, fabulous hand eye co-ordination, and can do things some others only dream of being able to do. This is something which cannot be coached.

A good comparison would be JT vs ZT. JT had all the athletic ability in the word, and was something to watch. ZT did not but, had a HUGE heart, and spent countless hours breaking down game film to make up for his lack of athleticism. ZT had to work 2-3 times harder to be VG because he did not have the same kind of talent, and there is no way couching was going to give that to him.

terrell suggs restructure is done...saves em $4 mil on this 2014 cap evidently...haloti ngata may be approached next about a restructure

Some more info:

The Baltimore Sun reports contract talks with NT Haloti Ngata went nowhere for the Ravens.
Ngata is scheduled to count a team-high $16 million against the 2014 salary cap and has two years left on his deal. The Ravens would ideally like to extend him like they did with Terrell Suggs in order to create space so they can re-sign free agents like Dennis Pitta, LT Eugene Monroe, and ILB Daryl Smith. Ngata just turned 30 years old and isn't going anywhere.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens and free agent Dennis Pitta are "far apart" in ongoing contract talks.
Unless the gap is bridged between now an March 3, the deadline for teams to use the franchise tag, Pitts is expected to be tagged. If Pitta is franchised, he's expected to file a grievance arguing that he should be paid as a receiver. Either way, Pitta is expected to be with the Ravens for the 2014 season at the very least.

The Baltimore Sun reports free agent LT Eugene Monroe remains a priority for the Ravens.
The two sides have had "preliminary talks," and the Ravens view Monroe as a long-term solution on Joe Flacco's blind side. Baltimore dealt two draft picks to Jacksonville for Monroe ahead of last season's trade deadline. The franchise tag isn't believed to be an option for Monroe. He's our No. 1 free-agent tackle.

To me it's far more likely that the Ravens make Monroe priority A and don't let him go anywhere. But the NFL is unpredictable, he might simply be asking for too much or the Ravens may not value OT's enough to invest a say $10m figure in him. If he hits the market anything is possible.

Why is it that Ozzie Newsome could get Monroe in a trade with Jax for a sweet price but Ireland couldn't? And then Ireland scrambles to trade draft picks for Baltimore's refuse, Bryant McKinnie. Things to ponder.

because no one else knew he was on the market?

Some other GM said he had wished he were on the market.

Hard to imagine Jax not looking for the best offer, and keeping it a secret.

Per Rotoworld:

Free agent LT Eugene Monroe said he's not open to giving the Ravens any sort of hometown discount.
"You have to get the absolute best because you put forth your best effort all the time, every single day in this league," Monroe said. "So there are definitely no discounts, and you have to have you and your family's best interests at heart in terms of negotiating these deals." Monroe, 27 in April, is in the prime of his career and will be shooting for a big payday coming off his rookie deal. Monroe has proven durable and should find at or above $10 million annually. Seems like he's gonna make it hard on them at least. That 10mil # is a big one, I'm not sure I want to put that much money up, but we'll see if he commands that much
