Report: Philbin almost quit over Sherman situation

That article told me that Sherman is a good man, even if he's a lousy OC.

I can't help but detect sexism with the Aponte bashing, especially considering the source. I'm sure Armando doesn't want Dawn down at the club while he's doing the 'bobaloo' (Ricky Riccardo reference). Go home, Lucy, eh..er.. Dawn!

I hope that report is not true. I personally am willing to give Philbin time to get this team where we want it, but if he was actually close to quitting I seriously have to question his love drive and love for his job.

Anybody else think Sherman had handshake/wink wink with Philbin that if he left, Philbin had to keep Turner and Taylor on board? How else can explain their continued employment. Maybe Zac isn't horrible, but I don't think he deserves to be the one shaping our franchise quarterback.

so what!! should had the knob hit his ass with the quickness. ain't like he was 24-8, 22-10 in two seasons... crappy 15-17?!! please... leave if you want, I won't be mad atcha

On a site where Parcells is repeatedly mocked as bringing a passe style, we've still got posters clinging to the old reputation of Bleacherreport.

Why am I not surprised?

Walrus and SkapePhin got it right, per usual. With so many mainstream outlets like Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly going out of business, those writers needed outlets and Bleacherreport scooped up many highly respected guys who were known for their work elsewhere. With budgets tight and advertising dollars diminishing, major print outlets don't dump their established guys in favor of writers who have demanded higher salaries elsewhere. Nowadays you've got many guys writing for lesser sources than their talent level warrants.

It never ends. It's like Peyton Place times 100.

Shocking you would have disagreed with me on this hell I bet you were one of the ones disagreeing in 2010 when I criticized hiring her. What most of you guys don't get was during this time Cribbs was not only the Browns bright spot he was a local hero from Kent State etc.... Also at that time Cribbs had double the career kick return yard Hester did whose contract set the bar, Cribbs flipped the field countless times for the Browns and some games was the Browns only real scoring threat. Remember him breaking our back? Now as far as that ridiculous $20 mil number you threw oucdefending Aponte you couldn't be more wrong! Cribbs signed a 3 yr extension worth $15,496,000 with $400,000 carry over from previous contract.

Now let's break it down shall we? In 2010 his base salary was $688,000, prorated signing bonus $1,500,00, workout bonus $100,000, bonuses likely to be earned of $250,000 and $2,100,000 bonuses unlikely to be earned. In 2011 his base was $832,00, prorated signing bonus of $1,100,000, workout bonus of $100,000, likely bonuses earned of $250,000 and $2,100,000 unlikely to be earned with escalators of $2,350,000. In 2012base salary $925,000, prorated signing bonus $1,100,000,workout bonus $100,000, and $2,350,000 in escalators.

Now Cribbs actually earned $2,538,500 in 2010, $2,407,000 in 2011, and $2,688,000 in 2012. That is a little bit different from the ridiculous number you threw out claiming Holmgrem signed him to a poison deal and claiming Aponte was right! Matter of fact Holmgrem negotiated a very good contract given Cribbs had just been named all pro he was light years ahead of other kick returners in yards, and was being used as a kick returner, punt returner, wr, qb and rb while running the wildcat. So the reality is Cribbs made 7 mil and change for his extension he suffered a knee injury his first year that I believe required surgery, and it was rumored was not used in the final year to keep from paying out escalators.

All contract figures were taken from sporttrac.

Adding to it comparing Cribbs to Hester which were the AFC/NFC All Pro players and multi use after the 2009 season through 2012.

Hester had 1606 punt return yards, 7 punt return TDs, 2297 kick return yards, 4 kick return TDs, 1721 receiving yards, 8 receiving TDs, 32 rushing yards and 0 TDs.

Cribbs had 1126 punt return yards, 2 punt return TDs, 5955 kick return yards, 7 kick return TDs, 620 rushing yards, 2 rush TDs, 281 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs.

Hester was playing on a playoff contender and a Super Bowl team in that time frame while Cribbs was playing for the leagues trash. Also Hester made significantly more then Cribbs over those 3 years.

Did it ever dawn on you, no pun intended, that Mike Holmgren might be the incompetent one in the Cleveland front office. Take a look at his track record as the head of player personnel or football czar. It is a train wreck. It ranges from overpaying a guy like Cribbs, to over drafting guys like Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden. After the current Browns administration traded away his former third overall pick of the 2012 draft, Trent Richardson, Holmgren was outspoken with criticism about trading such a "great" player. Well, it looks like the current Browns front office raped the Colts by trading Richarson to them for a first round pick. With Seattle, before he came to the Browns, he blundered his way to a deteriorating roster because of his personnel decisions. Just about every decision Mike Holmgren has ever made when he has had final say has been a unmitigated disaster. Aponte made the right call on not wanting to overpay Cribbs. The Browns might have been better served if they had kept Aponte and got rid of Mike Holmgrin.

It is easy for anyone to make the claim that this article does.

Everyone knows Philbin and Sherman were good friends and it was reported(by respectable sources) that it was tough for Joe to fire him. That part is not debated, so it is very easy for an article to claim that Philbin almost quit. Might be true, could be BS, but Bleacher Report doesn't have a great track record and it doesn't matter if the writer WAS well respected and once wrote for a real news outlet(why does this writer now write for this site? Hmmm. Makes you wonder).

Personally, I wouldn't doubt if quitting a least crossed his mind when the process started when talking about Sherman's job. Doesn't mean that Joe had his boxes packed and ready to go or anything like that, but he might have expressed his desire to keep Sherman to Ross. Philbin's final decision was likely a mutual decision between him and Ross and I don't think this is much of an issue going forward.

With all that said, I still think it is funny that even after all the reports and stories this past week that caused so much doom and gloom that ended up either false or over exaggerated, some are still blindly gobbling up stories as being 100% fact. Be careful to accept anything you read on the internet as being completely true, even a "well respected" writer like Mike Silver said Ireland was keeping his job, but was fired a couple of days later.

I don't see where the stories are false. More like swept under the rug if you ask me. Or is it the horse blinder effect. Or perhaps the herd mentality. Take our pick.

But it matters not anymore. It's all about next year now. And the new coach I believe they will have to hire in 2015.

I found this bit interesting:

The best defenses during the regular season and the postseason pretty clearly belong to the Seahawks, 49ers and Panthers, in no particular order.

No particular order? Seattle ranked 1st in YPG, PPG, forced TO's, and RZ D . . . What else do they have to do?

Sorry no pics. It's funny though, that no matter how many times I post with a feminine name like Honey, people still assume I'm male.

LOL maybe they swing that funny way. So of course they think that. LOL Just kiddin. LOL

It wouldn't surprise me if it is true. It must have been difficult for Philbin to fire his best friend of 30 years.

Yeah difficult but not to much he still did it.

You have to also consider the source "The goings on in the Dolphins front office that were exposed by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald sound familiar to people".

Once again Salguero will say anything to bash the Dolphins now that Jeffy is gone.

Man it amazes me that people only see what they want to see time after time. Wow

I know finheaven is going to discredit this article because its bleacher report but its probably true. What have the Dolphins done lately that would make anyone believe that any shenanigan reported by any outlet isn't true. This whole Aponte thing doesn't surprise he one bit. Steve Ross is half assing this any way you want to look at it if you ask me. Maybe it works out but I have strong doubts. He really should have fired Ireland first then hired a new GM and stepped away allowing the new GM to put together an administration and coaching staff he wanted to work with. A team that would strive for one common goal. The patchwork he's putting together will likely fail hopefully he cleans house next time.

Don't bad mouth Steve Ross. The homers who think he's God will attack you.
