Rishard Matthews trade speculation.

Detroit has tight end depth and Mathews would be the 3rd wr on that team...he'd be the 3rd wr on Houston's team also

Nonsense...he is speculating that we could add TE depth...why? That isn't really a top concern right now. If he was talking about a guard, maybe, but a TE???

Trading Hartline costs us $4M on the cap this year, and saves $3M next year. Not going anywhere. Gibson saves $1.7M, replacement cost 500K, save $1.2M. Matthews is paid lunch money.

The 5th WR is not likely to get much playing time without an injury. Landry and Matthews are best in the slot but Gibson can easily move outside. Matthews is, at worst, cheap insurance, and someone who could easily fit in more next year with trade options on Hartline and Gibson.

This would be foolish IMO. Hartline hasn't looked great. Gibson has looked good but is coming off an injury, and despite all the hype Landry is an unproven rook.

As he proved last year when Gibson went down, Matthews can step up and make the big catches on 3rd down.

Someone explain all this to me....consecutive 1000yd seasons and could become the first Dolphin to post 3 in a row. How exactly is he not solid and "not look good"?? The most solid receiver we have had for 2 years and has shown no signs of slowing down. Unless we are overreacting to 1 dropped pass in the preseason.

if you don't know, I know you don't watch the games. He bobbled a pass against Carolina last year that
got intercepted. He can't block. Rizzi was on him about the blocked punt against Dallas. His routes are not diciplined. He drops passes.
How is he not inconsistent?

Last season, Matthews caught 41 passes and dropped one, which is as good as it gets in the NFL. He misses a block on a punt in preseason, and now he can't block? And you actually say someone else does not watch games? LOL

I've counted 3 drops this preseason. But the eye test for many so far it looks like hartline really isn't a great fit for Lazor's scheme. I hope were all wrong because I like Brian. He's looked out of place so far with his skill set.

I think it would be a mistake to trade him. It's very likely that we are going to have an injured receiver and having Matthews on hand will become very important. Last year, out receiving corp was decemated by injuries.

This was my point last week about keeping as many WRs as possible through cuts. We have tradeable assets.

As some on here and the article also stated, keeping Matthews on the roster gives us a tradeable asset. Whether he is the traded party or someone in front of him. If we can flip a WR for a TE or LB that will stick on our 53 and push for starts, then we've correctly manipulated our roster. Dumping talent simply because we have too many in one position in order to keep garbage at another position is ridiculous.

If we keep someone like Daniel Thomas instead of Matthews or Da. Williams or De. Williams, it's bad football in my mind. I would keep extra WRs on my roster for at least 1 week in efforts to trade them. I think we can find anyone to replace DT walking on the street.

But keeping a Matthews or Da. Williams gives you the option to trade a Gibson or Hartline or WR in front of him and soften the blow while possibly allowing you to leverage yourself into acquiring an actual starter at a weak position.

And please don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade Gibson or Hartline. But, from a business standpoint, you have to consider that some assets make you better by their play on the field and some assets give you options to get better play on the field.

Football is a business. And businesses need resources and assets in order to succeed.

I would be very upset if we traded Matthews. Not only does he look like he's finally about ready to blossom, but we saw what happened last season when we didn't have enough depth at WR. When Hartline went down in week 17, we couldn't move the damn ball.

Isnt that kind of an argument against trading Hartline?

If I can save 3 mil next year losing hartline this offseason smart move to me is keep Mathews and cut bait with hartline after the year ...Mathews can also play outside along with Gibby and landry

That's a great point, and yes, I do realize it undermines my belief that we should trade Brian Hartline.

However, here is the thing: I think that this offense needs to put Matthews or Landry on the field, and the fact is that they're only going to get out there in 4 WR sets while Brandon Gibson is out there being the guy a lot of people on this board think Brian Hartline is -- that tough as nails, sure-handed, clutch guy you can look to on 3rd down or in the red zone.

I like Brian Hartline. He's able to bluntly state a lot of things that need to be said to reporters with just enough tact to avoid getting himself in trouble. I think it's awesome that during the off-season, he worked behind the counter in a convenience store -- in life, the guy just gets it. He's easy to cheer for. I think he was a pretty good fit for Mike Sherman's offense and he's been a productive player for us.

But right now, I think his salary is an impediment to putting our best 3 receivers on the field. Just my honest opinion.

Absolutely, we could really use the $4M in cap space next year rather than giving it up for next to nothing this year.
