Ross on Ireland's future: "You take it one year at a time..."

Do you believe Steve Ross would have answered the question the exact same way if the question was about Philbin as opposed to Ireland? Do you think he would have said, "You take it one year at a time..."?
Don't think he would have because everyone gets a honeymoon period. But sometimes you just get a feeling something isn't quite right and in that case you should get rid of them but probably don't and end up regretting it, can't see Ross having those feelings about Philbin though.

Ireland is in his 5th season with the Dolphins which have not been very successful. Ross' answer was appropriate. Fans know it. Ireland knows it. If they fail Ireland gets fired by Ross.

If Ross is commenting on his first year coach he does not answer the same way. If he does, he's a bigger idiot then originally believed.

however he essentially answered "yes" to the question of whether the Dolphins need to win this year for Ireland to keep his job.

Come on really? He didnt say anything like that at all. I understand your diislike for Ireland, but thats just horsesh*t.

Admitting that his evaluation on whether to keep or release Jeff Ireland will change year to year means that Ireland is answerable for how much winning his team does this year. How is this not obvious?

Well thats not the entore answer Ross gave, and yes I think he would say the same thing about Philbin if asked that question "You take it one year at a time....I'm committed to him. If I had any doubts, he wouldn't be here"

If you dont evaluate your personel at the end of every year, what kind of owner would he be?

Exactly my point but whatever.

Ireland outlived Sparano. Philbin can outlive Ireland.

If Steve Ross were asked whether Joe Philbin needs to win this year to keep his job, do you think he would have replied, "You take it one year at a time..."?

I don't.

If Philbin goes 0-16 he will be evaluated as he should be every year.

Disagree. Wouldn't surprise me if Ross plucked someone willing to accept Philbin as the Head Coach if needed.
It is like when people thought Marshall was safe on the roster after Sparano was fired. A new coaching staff had a different view for the team and they shipped him out. The Raiders hired a new GM this year, and his first move was firing the head coach to bring in HIS guy. Even though Hue Jackson had only been the full time head coach one year and had a respectable 8-8 record for that franchise.

The Browns today are on the verge of being sold to a new owner. There is talk and reports that Holmgren will be relieved of his duties once the sale is final. People in charge will always want to surround themselves with THEIR people. Unless you pluck a yes man GM from the Packers or someone who has a prior relationship to Philbin, his job will be in jeopardy if Ireland is fired. The big name on the GM market next offseason will no doubt be Bill Polian, and I know some people on this very message board have said they would like him. Pretty sure Polian will want HIS guy as the head coach and would boot Philbin out the door without second guessing. You are kidding yourself if you don't think Philbin and Ireland are connected. They are.

If Philbin goes 0-16 he will be evaluated as he should be every year.

I agree. But at this point I don't think Steve Ross envisions any realistic scenario where the Dolphins go 0-16 or even 1-15. And therefore no I don't think he would have answered the question the same way for Philbin as for Ireland.

For the record, and this is for everyone else's benefit as I doubt Nublar will ever acknowledge this, but there are many sources in and around the Raiders that have reported that Hue Jackson was on the outs far before the new Raiders General Manager was hired. Hue Jackson's firing had little to do with the new General Manager up and deciding he wants his own coach and therefore having to convince everyone else to fire Hue. He was already on the way out.

Did you? Here is the exact question and answer, word for word. He began his answer with the statement, "You take it one year at a time." I don't think that's an "out of context" quote when it's literally the first thing you say in answer to the question.

I don't want to pick a fight with you CK but Ben Volin has the quote in a different order than that of Barry Jackson. It is listed in the "12 things we learned about the miami dolphins" article that just came out.

1. Stephen Ross, on his expectations this year: “Every season I want to win, and that’s the only way I can look at it. … I’m looking to win.” When asked if Jeff Ireland is on any sort of hot seat this year, Ross said, “I’m committed to him. If I had any doubts, he wouldn’t be here. We take one year at a time, but I think we have a great team here.”

So now we have to ask ourselves who got the quote correct and who changed it. I wonder if there is a video of the interview that would set the record straight? I'm not gonna lie I'm much to lazy to look for it. Either way I think the people who think Ireland is on the hotseat because of this comment are looking into it much deeper than what Ross meant by it. Ross has learned from past FUBAR's that you don't give the media anything to run with and that's exactly what I think he was doing here.
