Rumor: Philbin wanted to trade for Albert. Ireland said no

Yes, but I chuck that up to Sparano. He was enamored with that guy.

Ireland deserves a lot of blame but this notion that Philbin wasn't involved and has no blame is ridiculous as well. Just like it was ridiculous to blame Parcells but not Ireland for the first two drafts. Then what the hell was Ireland doing? Organizing lunch?

It is really hard to ask a rookie HC in his first gig at the position to overrule a GM who has been entrenched in his position for years.

Except he had an AWOL evidence to back up his demand.

To me that whole draft was a non Ireland draft.

How can you say that? Ireland was the GM and he had the responsibility to make the call. It's good if he is prepared to work with the Head Coach, but to just say "Joe, who do you want? - OK good enough for me, I'm just here to keep you happy..." Well I don't buy it. Ireland lived for the draft. He loved every moment of it. And now you say that well he didn't make the picks it was all Joe. I just don't buy it.

This is interesting: I'm told Philbin wanted to trade for Branden Albert last year but Ireland said Dolphins would be fine with Martin at LT

Take it how you want.
I take it this way. The man who currently serves as the HC (I will not call him a Head Coach because he is not) may have wanted Albert, and I am sure the other guy wanted Albert as well. The problem is Kansas City was insisting on getting a 2nd round pick for Albert and was not allowing teams to give him a pre-trade physical.

I'm pretty sure Philbin has some involvement but he relied heavily on Ireland and his staff for recommendation about players. If you remember, Philbin was hired the week of the Senior Bowl and spent that time not in Mobile but in Miami trying to put his staff together.

This.

Meshes with the report that Joe told the FO that Martin straight up could not play left tackle. You can choose whether or not to believe it, because at this point people inside the Dolphins are going to pin the blame for everything on Jeff Ireland, but I think it's obvious that there was a huge disconnect between the personnel department and the coaching staff.

Another piece to the puzzle is the fact that Martin was skipping out on ota's, there's no way Philbin would say: thats fine, whatevs...

Andrew Abramson is 2 weeks late on this rumor. Old news. Next...

And he will have to rely on the new GM this year as well. I just read on PFT that the Dolphins coaching staff is not present at the Senior Bowl. Hopefully, our future GM is there. I don't get that. Philbin should be there, no question. Sounds like Gaine is the only one there for the Dolphins.

Honestly I'm not shifting all blame to Ireland (Michael Egnew was reportedly a Joe Philbin request) but I do think that it's become obvious that there was a HUGE disconnect on players. Some on Philbin, some on Ireland. There are rumors on both and there is probably enough truth to go along with it.

My belief has always been that a GM should be able to work with his scouts, the head coach, and all the assistant coaches to pick players. I don't really think Ireland quite understood what type of players Joe's staff wanted.

Gaine and all the scouts are there. I agree that even if Philbin isn't there, the other coaches should be.

I'm wondering if they are going to put more emphasis on the one-on-one with each player than the controlled atmosphere that is the Senior Bowl.
