Ryan Tannehill: Accuracy by the Numbers

No I said the Deep ball isn't that bad and he is great with the short game. However where Tannehill struggles is the medium ranges of 11-20 and 21-30. He is poor in this range.

do you watch the games? his deep ball accuracy is awful. the only thing he does well is the deep hitch/curl/comeback where he can wait and see the break and then fire a line drive at a stationary target.

and I am not just chalking up every road game in Buffalo as a loss. that is bull****. what a ****ing loser mentality.

If you actually go back and look strictly at Tannehills dropbacks for the Buffalo game it's not nearly trainwreck it was made out to be in these forums.

For all the time people spend unrealistically bashing T-hill, check it out for yourself. Compliments of Jake McAwful:

Thanks! If you watch it Tannehill played rather well. I don't no what everyone is complaining about. Buffalo kicked our butts plain and simple.

Tannehill played rather well? Now I know you are totally crazy. He even said it himself that he needs to improve. Man, I would love to live in this world of yours, truly. Sunday's would be more fun these days. lol, wow.

Yeah I do. It's a low percentage throw. Peyton Manning only threw the ball over 31+ yards 17 times vs. Tannehills 33. The more you throw it deep the crappier the completion percentage gets.

Everyone is acting like Tannehill proved he is nothing. He didn't play great and needs to improve but nothing stood out to say Tannehill sucks! Did you watch the entire game?

I disagree. RT doesn't lead his receivers, and because of that, he minimizes YAC. That's a huge problem and it results in less scoring. When he starts hitting players in stride on some kind of regular basis, I'll listen to the "RT doesn't suck" arguments.

Tannehill is not entirely devoid of talent, he did make it to the NFL. But by the highest standards for his position, he is not currently a good QB. Period. You cannot argue that. You want to talk about what he can MAYBE turn in to, where he needs to improve, fine. Right now, today, Tannehill is average or slightly above on his best days. In games when he's not on top of his games, he looks terrible. That's where you can tell. The really good one, when they have a bad game, they still look the part.

disagree how? all of what I said happened.

you know, what's the saying, everyone's got a plan until they punched in the mouth? that is what this game is about. MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT for christ's sake. Don't just stand there and keep doing the same BS all game and walking off the field. All these things people talk about, football IQ, a feel for the game, etc... that's what they're talking about. He's the QB, the leader of the offense, understand what's happening, what isn't working, adapt, overcome. He hasn't shown this ability.

Who the hell says that? That's retarded...

its a well known saying, attributed to mike tyson I believe. calm down.

Who's excited? I just never heard anything this stupid recently and wanted to know what genius it's attributed to. Tyson? Now it makes perfect sense... Both for how stupid a "saying" it is and why I've never heard it repeated by anyone with any intelligence. Carry on...

OP does a good job of showing a balanced evaluation. Praising short passing game but also showing the deficiencies in the 11-30 range.
Below are my comments on the actual break down of stats

Starting with the deep ball (Pass Thrown 41+ yds) Ryan Tannehill was:

3rd in Completions
2nd in Attempts
3rd in Yds
Tied for 2nd in Completion %, I didn’t count 5 players because they only had one completion
Tied for 2nd (Higher the better) in Td
Tied for 2nd (Higher the better) in int, 12 had none, 4 had one

Not counting players is manipulating the stats to make it look more positive.
If 12 players had no interceptions and 4 players including Tannehill had one then he is tied for 13th -16th (Not tied for second)
No range of the tie provided for TD's thrown. With 1 TD he could be tied with half the league. How many players threw more than 1?
If it was more than 1 then once again he isn't tied for second

The slightly less deep ball (Pass Thrown 31-40 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
Tied for 3rd in Completions
1st in Attempts
6th in Yds
9th in Completion %, Keep in mind he was 1st in attempts
Tied for 4th (Higher the better) in Td, 1 had five, 3 had three, 1 had two, 5 had one, 6 had none
Tied for 3rd ( Higher the better) in int, 1 had three, 3 had two, 7 had one, 5 had none

If you are going to show a tie in rankings you need to show thew range of the Tie or it can be misleading.
For instance on TD's you show Tied for 4th. That sounds really good out of 16.
But when there are 5 teams with the same amount of TD's it is really tied for 4th thru 8th (T4-8)
That is really just above the middle of the league average and considering the he has the most attempts is not good.

Starting with the deep ball (Pass Thrown 21-30 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
15th in Completions
Tied 9th in Attempts
15th in Yds
Tied for 14th in Completion %
Tied for 6th (Higher the better) in Td, 1 had six, 1 had five, 1 had four, 5 had three, 2 had two, 4 had one, 2 had none
Tied for 2nd (Higher the better) in int, 1 had none, 5 had one, 5 had two, 2 had three, 1 had four, 1 had five, 1 had six

OP doesn't seem to understand how rankings work.
With One TD he is tied for 11th thru 14th (T11-14) not tied for 6th

Starting with the deep ball (Pass Thrown 11-20 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
2nd in Completions
1st in Attempts
2nd in Yds
7th in Completion %,
Tied for 7th (Higher the better) in Td
7th (Higher the better) in Int

To me this is the meat of the NFL passing game. You have to be able to be successful in this area. From the attempts thrown to the actual results in TDs/Ints there is a major difference.
Once again the high end of the tie is shown and the range of the tie isn't to make it look better than it is

Starting with the deep ball (Pass Thrown 1-10 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
4th in Completions
4th in Attempts
6th in Yds
8th in Completion %
Tied for 3rd (Higher the better) in Td
Tied for 4th (Higher the better) in Int

Ryan excels in this area. This is his best area of passing.

I gave thanks for the OP in the opening post due to the work he put in. But also have to question the manipulation of rankings to make the deep pass look a bit better than it really is.

Per Rotoworld: "Ryan Tannehill is blaming poor footwork for an inaccurate start to the season"
About did a spitake on this comment. He's in his 3rd year in the NFL and he's still trying to figure out his footwork? Most scouts will tell you that's something they want corrected and in place before they ever get to the NFL. While I realize he hasn't played the position forever like some guys, it still shouldn't be a "work in progress" into your third year in the pros. Not sure if that's completely his fault or a lack of coaching? Regardless, until he stops throwing behind receivers and staring down his main target, he will be more of a liability than benefit to this team. I've been trying to give him time to "develop", but I keep seeing the same things from him that he's been struggling with the previous 2 years. He better start making huge strides the rest of this year, otherwise I think we may have another Chad Henne.

I see a failure to properly place passes as to assist the receiver in catching it in stride and allowing for YAC. Many throws are behind guys or in a spot where they need to extend their bodies to catch the ball.
Poor down field passes where he could have lead a receiver to open field or scored..

I agree. This is my biggest concern with Tanny. Keep in mind though, a lot of times he can't lead his receiver due to a safety or another DB covering the gap. When Wallace blows the lid off the secondary, Tanny needs to throw to the open space and let him run to it. He has to trust his WRs and work on anticipating when they will come open.

Holding on to the ball too long, especially when facing a persistent pass rush. .
Repeatedly getting balls batted at the LOS..

I somewhat agree. it was more of a problem the last 2 years than I have seen this year, but this year has only just begun. I thought he did a good job of throwing the ball away if the play wasn't there in the NE game. Not so much in the Bills game.

The biggest problem was that our O-line was completely outmatched by the Bills. He had no pocket nearly all day. Having no ground game with Knowshon out made it easy for the Bills to rush on nearly every down.

Without much separation between him and the D-line, he will be hard-pressed to find a passing lane or be able to get the ball through without being tipped or blocked. Most NFL QBs would get the same results with the kind of protection he got against Buffalo.

Doesn't appear to have a good feel for oncoming pass rushers around him..

Again, when the pocket collapses 1 step into your back-peddle, you can't place the blame solely on Tanny. We had both tackles getting manhandled, guards getting pancaked, and unaccounted for pass rushers.

That said, he does need to do a better job at reading the blitz and unaccounted for pass rushers. I'm not sure how much liberty Philbin and Lazor give Tanny to audible, but he definitely needs to work on that. If they aren't letting him audible, they need to. If he can, he needs to do a much better job at it.

No ability to adjust delivery or acceleration of reads.
Poor touch on screen and outlet passes, couple balls completely over thrown to a receiver near the LOS..

I disagree with slow reads, I think he does a good job there, particularly when you consider the amount of time he has (or more accurately, doesn't have) to get rid of the ball.

I agree with his touch. He needs to work on his softer passes and putting more arc on some passes when there is coverage in front of his receiver. Not every pass needs to be thrown on a rope.

Doesn't do a convincing job selling that option play..

Yea, I'm not completely thrilled with that either. That said, if the defense doesn't respect our RB, the Playaction will be less effective. Missing Knowshon hurts.

He was basically under pressure constantly, bad showing by the o-line..

Agreed.

Tanny needs work, I don't think a soul on this board will deny that. But he isn't as bad as many believe. He can still develop into a very good QB. The season just started, lets see how he progresses. We will know where we stand with him by the end of the year.

Tannehill's two best throws are comebacks and curls, to bad the receiver is heading in the wrong direction on those catches. Those routes usually end where the ball is caught.
