Ryan Tannehill: Accuracy by the Numbers

Per Rotoworld: "Ryan Tannehill is blaming poor footwork for an inaccurate start to the season"
About did a spitake on this comment. He's in his 3rd year in the NFL and he's still trying to figure out his footwork? Most scouts will tell you that's something they want corrected and in place before they ever get to the NFL. While I realize he hasn't played the position forever like some guys, it still shouldn't be a "work in progress" into your third year in the pros. Not sure if that's completely his fault or a lack of coaching? Regardless, until he stops throwing behind receivers and staring down his main target, he will be more of a liability than benefit to this team. I've been trying to give him time to "develop", but I keep seeing the same things from him that he's been struggling with the previous 2 years. He better start making huge strides the rest of this year, otherwise I think we may have another Chad Henne.

Lazor came in this offseason and is trying to correct the errors of Sherman's poor coaching here. Any player of worth is always working on their craft and techniques. It is easily correctable once the old habits are ditched and the new training is engrained into his muscle memory so to speak. It's really not that big of a deal and hopefully you were able to swallow that beverage with out much strain.

Not counting players is manipulating the stats to make it look more positive.
If 12 players had no interceptions and 4 players including Tannehill had one then he is tied for 13th -16th (Not tied for second)
No range of the tie provided for TD's thrown. With 1 TD he could be tied with half the league. How many players threw more than 1?
If it was more than 1 then once again he isn't tied for second

I get what you mean. For Int. I counted the 12 players with no int as tied for 1st. The 4 with one as tied for second. You put 13th-16th I guess that makes sense. So for td only 1 player threw for two, 5 threw one, and 10 threw none. So if I did tied for 2nd-6th that would be more what your looking for?

Actually go back and watch something? I can't just read stats off of ESPN?

Where do you think stats come from, a football stork? They come from watching film, and are official records of the NFL. Some are debatable, while others are just facts taken from watching film.

Um. He's completed 2 bombs in his entire career:

1. Great throw to Hartline vs AZ In his rookie year that went for 80 yd TD.

2. Questionable bomb to Wallace vs Carolina that went for 50 or so yd TD last year. Better catch than throw but we'll take it.

That's it. Has missed every bomb (ball in air 40+ yards) he's ever thrown. I know what my eyes tell me. And they tell me he can't hit a long one if his life depended on it.

Good post OP. Nice analysis as well.

I didn't believe the stats when they said Tannehill sucked and I don't believe them when they say he is elite. I like stats ... but I ultimately draw my conclusions from the eyeball test.

Tannehill is good and very accurate, IMHO. But a new offense is causing bumps in the road for him, his receivers, TE's, and RB's. Lots of sloppy routes and bad timing. Pressure is still getting through our line a LOT. Shelley is playing like garbage ... and I think he is better than Dallas Thomas. Colledge and Satele have been hit and miss. Albert hasn't been at his best but has done OK. The one bright spot is James in pass pro ... who has held up well. If only the kid didn't collossally suck at run blocking.

With Moreno we looked pretty decent. With Miller we looked terrible. Sorry 'Cane fans, but Miller has been bad.

Sims had a good preseason .. but he is looking like the dud he was last year once the bullets started flying. All of our WR's have a case of the dropsies ... including Landry who had an unforced fumble as a returner.

We look like the Bad News Bears ... before they recruited the kid with talent.

You have to compare stats with film. If you have 3 sacks etc. film helps determine who is at fault.

Tannehill keeps being too conservative. He is afraid to put the ball in front of receiver on the shallow crossing patterns for fear of an interception ... so he throws it slightly behind them making them slow down and lose momentum and run after catch opportunities.

If Wallace looks covered deep Tannehill over throws it because he fears Wallace losing the jump ball and getting it intercepted. If Wallace is blowing by his man then Tannehill is afraid of overthrowing him so he puts it short letting the DB get back in to disrupt the play or tackle just after the catch.

Tannehill does these things a lot. He needs to grow some bigger cajones and just throw it without fear. Until that confidence comes, he will not be a top QB.

I also wish he would become more of a vocal leader ... but not sure whether that one is really in the cards for him.

In 2012 was 4 of 14 in passes of 31-40 yards including that Hartline play. 0-3 of 41+ yard throws.

In 2013 was 4 of 21 in passes of 31-40 yards. 3-12 of 41+ yard throws.

ok. And how many led the receiver? Or on the 3-12 I'm betting two of them Wallace or whoever had to wait for it to come down like a punt (underthrown). He's led receivers into the EZ on long balls in the air precisely 2x. Not good enough.

Before the New England game there were camera shots of T-hill doing a "Drew Brees"ish type pregame huddle hype. There have also been a couple of occasions so far this year of him getting heated on the sidelines with other players. RT has stepped up as a leader and and his willingness to accept the role and grow in it can only be commended.

Yes, exactly. Thanks for compiling the work. Had to take a while....

I made the changes. It did and it's only the AFC QBs. I'm working on adding the NFC QBs. I'm curious to see how that changes things.

Outstanding post....I also agree with the point made earlier about giving Lazor some time to work his bugs out.

Patience Dolphin nation....we're 1-1....and my money is on us going 3-1 before the bye.
