Ryan Tannehill Improved No More than the Average Second-Year Starter at QB since 1994

Not a knock on Tannehill personally, but "lead the league in scoring in drives at the end of half" is a meaningless stat when your offense goes the whole half without scoring until the last drive.

Agreed. To "lead the league in scoring in drives at the end of half" you have to be behind in the 4th quarter. If you're going to give RT credit for those drives, don't you also have to hold him responsible for being in the situation that required those drives?

RT is a young QB that is going to take time. I am not sure where people think he should be at this point.

I thought he would take forever to get better. He has caught on in much more rapid fashion then I expected.

yes. he's better than i thought he'd be at this point and got there faster than i expected as well. i also think he's already locked in to be a top-half of this league QB for the next 10 years. but we drafted him to be an elite franchise QB and im not sure he is going to ascend to that level. i can see him being fringe pro bowl but not elite. i want an elite QB.

Just when i thought the ops new years resolution was to make less one star threads, i stumble across this.

To do what? That we don't know.

Obviously for some people in a better place than he is, or there wouldn't be any negative response at all associated with underscoring quantitatively where he is.

I think it is more that Sherman actually lets Tannehill go out and play and not manage. It seemed more times than not, when we went high tempo we had success. I don't know why we didn't use it more often.

Yeah, numbers are one thing, but we saw some passes that not all QBs can make and some fourth quarter performances that encourage. That three game stretch in early December was fantastic. Get the kid a solid o-line and solid running game and I believe he can really excel.

Except that Tannehill lead multiple game winning drives and his team lead the league in scoring in drives at the end of half. Anyways , Tannehill gets one more year from me.

Agreed and I'll add that I would give him a bit of a pass those last two games as I believe his knee was a problem planting and throwing. Let me throw this out there too. Can you find a team that Miami played this year that has a worse supporting cast on offense? Tanny beat four AFC playoff teams this year with an ok receiving corps (no one pro bowl calibre), no running attack and no o-line. Look at how many passing yards QBs like Brees get because of play action and dump offs to RBs.

I believe this kid's got the work ethic and talent to improve but the team needs to give him more support around him. He made way too many big time throws for me to disbelieve in his ability. He cut down his fumbles from the early season, he's cut down the batted balls, he was running out of trouble better etc. don't get wrapped up in numbers too much. That last game he's throwing balls into traffic because they desperately needed to score fast. His receivers are not great. They still need a stud skill position option that is more well rounded than Wallace. EVERY good QB has one (except perhaps Brady but their running game is solid).

It's painful but you have to be patient. A good O-line and this team is 10-6 at worst all other things equal.

What did you think of that 7 point output the last 2 games? Draft Johnny...

I am not hating I just want to make it clear... I just want more leadership and game winning drives. Sure he needs and Oline and yea he absolutely needs better weapons and a running game to lean on but I need to see more leadership and wins he does all on his own for me to grant him the title of "Franchise quarterback". I am just a fan with my opinion. Nothing else.

The difference between a Tom Brady, and a Ryan Tannehill is Heart and Drive. When we beat the Pats 3 weeks ago, Tom was so shook up, he gave a 1 minute interview and cursed, he was so pissed, the Dude cant stand to Lose. Ryan seems just fine with it, just check his post conference after the Jets game, just like Chad Henne, we are going NOWHERE with this Dude. I want someone who cares, pisses Aqua and Orange like I do. No some dotrk who picks his nose on the sideline, and cant beat the Jets at Home, or throw a Deep Ball. We must be cursed for not getting Drew Brees. Trust me Tannehill is not the Dude, mark it. Did not know who plays in the AFC East.

Here are the data for the QBs who started at least 10 games as rookies, as well as 10 games in their second seasons in the league, since 1994, the first year of the salary cap in the NFL.

The numbers for each QB represent the increase or decrease from his rookie season to his second season in standardized units. In other words, the numbers reflect a QB's increase or decrease in comparison to the league norm.

That almost all of the values in the bottom row entitled "Tannehill Z-score" have an absolute value no greater than 1.0 reflects the fact that Tannehill's increases or decreases with regard to these variables were not significantly different from that of the average QB from year one to year two.

The lone two variables where there were exceptions were sack percentage, where his increase was 1.2 standard deviations greater than that of the average QB from year one to year two, and net YPA, which accounts for passing attempts, passing yards, sacks, and yards lost on sacks, and where his decrease was a shade more than a standard deviation greater than that of the average QB from year one to year two. His decrease in adjusted net YPA was nearly a standard deviation greater than that of the average QB from year one to year two.

Take a vacation already :)

No. I think people will bitch about the home team QB unless they win the Super Bowl. It has nothing to do with quantifying something. It has to do with fans having unreal expectations of a player in his second year.

Thank god I dont think like Dick Spamwood.
