S Chris Clemons released, would like to have him back with Jones suspension

This is a no brainer IMO. Sign him. Now. I don't like him as a long term starter but as a band aid for Jones or insurance for prone Delmas he is a great option. Wilson is not the answer and none of our young safeties have made any impressions on me this offseason.

I would resign both Patterson & Clemons

I can understand Clemons but Patterson? Aside from not staying healthy in body apparently his mind has gone. He disappears after a pregame meal and doesn't show up for the game with the Jets? It's nice that in this case no one is saying "He didn't do well in Miami and now he is a star at .....". I don't think I want us to waste a roster spot for someone with Patterson's unreliability.

From what Texan fans are saying he just was mediocre and didn't really have the skill set Crennel is looking for in his safeties.

Oh and for those talking about Martin making the 9ers. He didn't have a good camp and was helped out a lot by injuries.

I agree that one of them will take Don Jones old role on Special Teams. I would also like to see Damian Williams back because he has more experience as a kick returner than anyone else on the team. I would feel better with Clemons filling in at one of the safety spots until Reshad Jones is back while Jimmy Wilson moves back to his nickle role. However pride may get in the way on both sides and Clemons probably won't be back. Just hoping that whatever Hickey and the staff decides to do works out for the best.

There is a school of thought that believes Damian W. was released in order to save money, as vets will have their salaries guaranteed if they are on the roster on Week 1. Damian's contract, however, was for only $700,000 dollars. Damien W. by comparison will make $420,000. It hardly seems reasonable to cut a player over that kind of money and risk him being signed by another team if you truly want him on your roster.

I doubt he will be back.

Thats ok as long as Martin lines up week one I could care less after that.

I was never satisfied with Clemons, although I thought he was the better of our 2 safeties when he was here. I think we need to find 2 new safeties next offseason. Delmas and Jones are not smart coverage guys.

I thought Clemons played well. Didn't get INT but was quick, decent coverage and didn't miss that many tackles.

2 years 2.7 mil...talk about no market for Clemons as a free agent after last year

So you want to re-sign a player who somehow is solid yet can't catch a cold?

Well you can have will Allen at cb or Terrell Buckley. I liked them both and one could get Ints and the other couldn't. But one would also get burned more often. So I'd take solid dependable play over flash.

I think people forget that in 2012 Clemmons spent most of the 2012 season giving up A LOT of big plays. Last year they changed up what they were asking him to do and he did a little better (but due to LB play Jones was also asked to do different things and struggled).

A lot of teams will ask Clemmons to play as a Centerfielder and he just isn't good at that.

That's an interesting take and I agree with quite a bit of it. But aren't you overrating him even as you make the case that he isn't overrated? You say he's the perfect veteran safety for the team and solidifies our secondary. I believe Hickey's goal here was to aim higher. Which I admired since it is difficult to replace someone who isn't as blatantly awful as Cameron Worrell (btw any S we ever compare to him is going to come out favorably). But there's a point where the inability to make plays in a position where you're needed as a playmaker isn't just a missed opportunity but an actual detriment to the team. The teams in the league obviously don't overrate him considering he was just cut. But a segment of our fanbase overrated him, which many members of this board represent. The outcry that came from many members of our fanbase when we let him go. The consistent oohs and aahs that his aberrational pff ranking inspires. I've seen Clemons take enough bad angles and blow enough coverages that the inability to make plays isn't completely compensated for by his non-disastrous play.

The Jones suspension creates a difficult situation for the team and a Clemons signing would make a lot of sense because of it. But signing him doesn't necessarily improve or solve the S situation it would only keep it from potentially slipping into a major problem. Which I don't believe Coyle would allow regardless. Personally, I think the lack of a true FS is one of our biggest weaknesses. Clemons isn't the solution to that and even as a stopgap, I find him limiting towards this team's true potential. The goal is to move away from stopgaps. We've seen enough of Clemons to know he isn't the solution at S. Even just in a backup role, I would rather bring in another option that may have that potential.

When I say perfect veteran safety, I'm using that in the sense that it is September 1st and there just isn't much as far as options are concerned. It's like Pouncey going down and me calling Satele the perfect veteran center to bring in. I'm not overrating Satele by saying that, but considering the options, the time frame and situation, he was signed and was starting 5 days later in the preseason and will be the starter until Pouncey returns . . . essentially he was the perfect guy to bring in, despite people talking about "he sucks", "Wilfork will own him", etc. There are no all stars to be found right now, just have to manage the situation. Signing Clemmons and Satele does nothing for the future of this team . . . however it does give you some flexibility to make this team better in the short term.

But I completely agree that FS and LB (a position everybody agrees needs addressing) need to be the 2 priorities we look at next year in the draft. Clemmons is more of the same and certainly not a guy you want to invest in long term. Hickey has done a real good job addressing the oline and offensive skill positions . . . next year we can get other priorites taken care of and continue tuning this oline. We'll be in good shape.

Clemmons is not really great at anything, but in Coyle's system he knew where he was supposed to be and it made him a reliable option back there. Reliability is extremely important as a FS because more often than not you are the last line of defense. He is rather slow diagnosing plays, so needs his good speed and ability to be in the right place to make up for that deficiency.

In short, theire is a reason he isn't a Miami Dolphin right now but with Jones suspended he makes a lot of sense to add back to this team and be that backup safety who you have relied on before and had positive results.

Might be hard to pass up some cash, but if I am Clemmons do I really want to come back to the team that made no effort to resign me, only as a stop gap..?
