Saban Hints He May Replace Gus If....

My point is you can use this language during the preseason and you can and should have this attitude during the regular season but what I'm saying is you dont go to the media with this college "we'll see week to week" stuff. You've just told the entire offense that the quarterback you're going to war with next week may not be around the following. This type of motivation simply doesnt work in the pros.
It seems as though you are a little bitter that we got a college coach. Did Spurrier make you a little uneasy? Saban seems like a great motivator. That is an important attribute to coaching. We'll all need to wait and see how all of this pans out, but let the guy make his decisions. Saban does not like the media, so I wouldn't believe everything written. I am guessing he wants to win and will choose the best QB to do just that.

I think you are completely wrong interpreting Saban's statements this way. It has been painfully obvious throughout the training camps and preseason games that Saban is demanding that someone step up in a commanding way and demand (figuratively) the QB position. Saban is not "unsure of his choice", he is making everyone aware that he knows the state of Miami's QB position and is putting Frerotte on notice that he is not beyond reproach, or demotion if the circumstances warrant it.

You should've stopped here Shakespeare. The point was in more than one post DO NOT GO TO THE MEDIA WITH THIS.

The naive thing to do is to thoroughly assess the QB situation and decide the competition on potential, an ethereal ability, or the fading memory of one pass in the waning moments of an otherwise inconsequential football game. That is the sort of decisionmaking that can be found in optimist football in suburbia. Those are the decisions that are made in a friendly game of two hand touch. "hey Jim, can you through the ball far?" "yeah, I can through it to that house over there, watch" ... "Ok, you are the QB... everyone go deep".

This is the worst type of hackneyed overindulgent selfabsorbed writing. This has absolutely nothing to do with my post but it gave you a nice paragraph. Perhaps you should ease up on skim milk lattes and simply have a beer:cool:

This is a ridiculous way to motivate performance. This is college amateur hour. You chose Gus, now stand behind him. Don't let the press know you're unsure of your choice. Grow up Saban

Gus did nothing to prove he should be the starting QB. It's not like Peyton Manning is the QB. He's picking out a starter out of three backups. If Gus throws 0 tds 4 ints next game he is not standing behind him! Saban won't just trash our season just to make sure Gus can be our starter. If Gus plays a horrible game, in comes Sage. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with giving someone else a chance if the starter is playing like crap anyways. It's not like you can go any worse. Maybe Sage can prove himself?

Look I have liked everything the guy has done on defense. I have serious questions about what he's doing on offense. Granted you cant do everything in one year. I think we needed at least one stud offensive lineman in the offseason instead he picked up some bargain basement types. Ok we got Houck lets give it a shot. I thought we should have got at least one speed demon at WR we got none. Considering our Oline do you really want our receivers having to take that extra second to get open. As for the QB situation everyone knows where i stood. Fine go with who you believe will come closest to playing the type of football you want. But dont undermine him as soon as you give him the keys. If I was Gus I would interpret that as I'm going to let you start but I have no faith in you. Who's motivated by that?

If saban had a great QB, he would play him and say it. He knows he has 3 subpar QBs, and knows he has to shuffle the deck because there is NO STARTER on this team.

Calling Nick wishy washy is unfair. He is doing the right thing. He has no QB. He had a pretty nice draft compared to Wanny's, and we actually are somewhat unpredictable on offense, and have a very scary D, so I am quite happy with Nick so far.

I agree that Gus has done nothing to engender faith in his ability to get the job done. Read my posts. I have no problem, in fact I encourage the attitude, of having a short leash on his performance. I am simply stating that you don't go to the media saying that, that's all.

I think Saban is saying it in the media because he doesn't care if Gus has alot of pressure on him. I'm guessing his thinking is, "if he gets tight under pressure, we don't need him".

Imo

I'm tired of the quarterback issue. True, none of them are stars, or even starters for that matter. It doesn't matter which one of the 3 is in there. When the line or receivers have false start penalties on the opening drives of games (more than 1 of the preseason games), these mediocre qbs don't stand a chance, because the game can't be placed on any of their shoulders. If Saban can't get these buffoons to play without these mistakes, we will lose, lose, lose!!! We can still win with them if we don't beat ourselves!
That being said, I want to see Sage start the season. Saban claims that he believes in production over talent. Why not let the most productive qb start? It doesn't matter that Sage played against scrubs, he produced! Lets see if he could do it with the 1st unit! We have nothing to lose. If it doesn't work out, we'll still have the ferret and the slug backing him up. He can't do any worse than what we've seen out of Gus or A.J.
I would rather see us lose a penalty-free game than watch the kind of performance we get out of them since Shula left. Remember when Shula's teams always led the league in fewest penalties? When they lost back them, it was truely by getting beat by better play, not by beating themselves!

And you have stated that for 3 pages now. (not being an a**, just letting you know that I understand what you are saying). I happen to think that Saban dislikes the media and tells them things to get them in an uproar. The media likes to write what they think, not necessarily what is really said or true. We are reading into things way to much. With that said, I do think that Saban did call out the Oline the other week to the media. I also think it worked. Not saying it is a good coaching style, but I would not call it college coaching either. Maybe that is his style, we don't know yet.

I agree that that's what he's doing I just don't think it works. Look at Frerotte's performance whne the job wasn't handed to him in preseason. He crumbled. Same with AJ. Look I would rather see Sage or AJ starting than Gus so maybe I should just be happy that he's putting this pressure on Gus. :)

Maybe I am reading into it too much and its true that the media can twist things. Who knows maybe this team responds to stuff like that. What the hey, I should be thrilled, Gus is the last of the QBs I want to start

I would love to see us lead in least penalties.

He has given Gus the opportunity and stood behind Gus all preseason, but Gus keeps on shooting himself in the foot. He just wants a qb to step up and take the job, thats all. As far as him talking about to the media, it's not as big of a deal as you are making it become. Saban's is obviously frustrated with the the performance of the qbs. Gus just needs to go out and play, and not look over his shoulder. If he plays alright then he will keep his job, I don't think he will be pulled unless he plays down right awful, then he deserves to be taken out. What are you talking about speed receivers, Chambers is a fast receiver, 4.35 40 speed, and he is really fast on slants, like the play against the Rams last year, no one can catch him after that. Boston is pretty damn fast also. We are fine at receiver. Gilmore is also a speedy receiver. As far as the qb thing goes, if Gus can't take the heat then he better get out the kitchen. Some qbs do better with pressure too, look at Brees last year, he was extremely close to losing his starting role, fortunately for him Rivers held out Brees played the regular season and did very well. I don't think any of our qbs will play like Brees, but pressure can make a player play better, also.

I dont know about Boston. I think he used to be fast but he looks slower to me. Gilmore and Chambers are fast but I would be surprised if Chambers still runs a 4.35. I was looking for a real burner like the Vikings' Williamson

I know this isn't a Tim Couch thread but I truly believe he will be our QB by the end of the year. I see Gus, Sage and possibly even AJ (Although I think he will get cut the minute we sign Couch) playing this year. Once Tim has a chance to learn the offense he will be the man. If Saban and Linehan can toughen him up mentaly he could be a great QB for us. Go Phins!!
