Saban on WQAM with Hank

Ya know, we really shouldn't be upset with Wanny.. I mean it's not his fault he screwed up out beloved Dolphins...Well it is, but he didn't do anything different than what he did in Chicago. Wanny is what he is. I blame Jimmy Johnson. Wayne put a lot of stock into what Jimmy said and that's why he hired him. Just another reason Jimmy bothers me so much. I still remember before Jimmy got the head coaching job he was in the Fox studio saying how the Dolphins should go to the Superbowl with all their #1 picks...Just setting up Shula's downfall.. I'll tell you one thing...We may not have won a Super Bowl since the 70's, but Shula's teams were much more exciting than Jimmy's.
 
Concerning Wade Smith at center......This will be a project type situation. There is no questioning that Wade has the foot quickness and athleticism need to get out on the second level and reach the linebackers as a center. He lacks the core strength to go up against a nose tackle or a tackle playing the "1" technique without having double team help though. Last season, he had some injuries that effected him all season long, but he did work hard in the offseason to improve his strength. He was the weakest lineman on the team. The way John Gamble tests the Dolphins on the bench press is that they put 320 lbs on the bar. Larry Chester just blasts this up. I believe that I heard he did something like 24-25 reps of 320 lbs. Every offensive lineman on the team can do this weight more than 10 times except Wade Smith. During Wade's rookie season, he couldn't do it once. He improved his strength enough to do it six times during his second season, so he did get stronger and bigger. Some felt that him getting bigger took away some of the advantage he had with his athleticism.

Calling him a sportscaster is a stretch because he is more interested in gambling than he is in sports. IMO he is the most overated sportscaster on the radio but I would still listen to him because he would come up with breaking stories occasionally.He seems to have lost that part of his repertoire since he moved to the morning show.When he started shilling gambling for Florida that was enough for me.Its Joe Rose now for me.


You dont have to a phycologist to detect that Saban is worn out.Jimmy would have been on his fishing boat right after the first pick.

Poole is 5'10, 193 lbs. Edwards is 6'0, 200 lbs. I know nothing about their run support skills. But, I saw Edwards look awful trying to cover Chris Chambers. And I saw Wil Poole play pretty well for a rookie. If he had to pick one to move to FS, it would be Edwards.

I thought Centers had to be cerebral .Does Wade Smith have it in that regards ?

Wade is a smart guy, but this is a difficult move to make considering that he has never played center before.

Dont just look at their measurables. Poole is a big hitter, a solid tackler and most importantly, he has great instincts - which are very important for a FS that plays centerfield. On the other hand, Edwards seems quite fragile - even at 200 pounds - and his instincts are questionable.

I can see Daniels and Howard fighting it out for the #2 DB job, with Edwards playing the dime (#4 DB). I could be way off, but I just dont any other way that Saban can make it through FA and the draft without signing a Free Safety to complement Tebucky Jones. I dont see a single, healthy, experienced FS on the roster. If Howard, Daniels and Co succeed at DB, Poole would be able to turn our weakness at FS into a strength.

AMEN......best statement I have read in awhile.....JJ is a backstabbing SOB for what he did to Shula and Marino.....good riddance to him and Wanny.

Yeah that would be the only reasons I would listen to Hank too. I like Rose since he has an opinion. As much as I like Mad Dog, he's pretty much spineless.

Saban does sound worn out. I hope he's eating his Wheaties and taking his vitamins. The season has not even started yet.
 
Personally I think Carey should have started last season. The 2 games he DID start showed that he could hang with the big boys...but for whatever reason they decided to continue having St. Claire play, even though we had a losing record.

As for Smith at center...I hope it works out. Like KB said he has the size and athletic ability, it's just his strength that's questionable. But who knows...look at McKinney, he's supposedly strong as an ox but was bowled over and tossed aside numerous times last season. (I know the blocking schemes were horrible, but going one on one against someone and getting your butt tossed has nothing to do with coaching)

Well...you can tell that Saban is getting ready for the long haul...

Poole will be our best corner...just wait n see
Daniles will be our #2 corner...probably next season not this season
Edwards will be our #3 corner...next season
Madison and Howard will not be in a Fins uniform for long...Madison will be gone after this season...Howard might be here for 2 more seasons...I hope Howard plays well...I like Howard.

This season...Madison and Howard will start...our 3rd Corner will be Poole...but I have a feeling that Poole will break into the starting lineup sooner rather later...probably by mid-season.

Depending on who is playing better...I could actually see Poole taking Madison's spot and Madison becoming our #3 corner covering the slot receiver.

I don't see Daniels and Edwards breaking into the starting line-up just yet.

I can see Daniels making the line-up as a dime CB at least, while not the quickest guy he does have size and is smart...but we did sign the illustrious Mario Edwards so who knows. :D

Very interesting analysis, Noodle. I can see the scenario you painted playing out just the way you described. But then who will play FS this year and next?
