A couple years back didn't Houston have the # 1 passing as well as # 1 rushing offense in the conference ? The guy can run an offense for sure.
No, don't think that's ever happened. Anyway, here's why I think people overrate that Texans talent on offense. Here are the team's two leading rushers and the team's leading receiver that isn't named Andre Johnson each year under Kubiak:
2006 rushers: Ron Dayne and Wali Lundy. Receiver: Eric Moulds (washed up version)
2007 rushers: Ron Dayne and Darius Walker. Receiver: Kevin Walter
2008 rushers: Steve Slaton, Ahman Green (washed up version). Receiver: Kevin Walter
2009 rushers: Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats. Receiver: Kevin Walter
2010 rushers: Arian Foster, Derrick Ward. Receiver: Kevin Walter
2011 rushers: Arian Foster, Ben Tate. Receiver: Owen Daniels
2012 rushers: Arian Foster, Justin Forsett (5.9 ypc), Receiver: Owen Daniels
2013 rushers: Ben Tate, Arian Foster. Receiver: DeAndre Hopkins
My conclusion is that GM Rick Smith handed Gary Kubiak Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels (a good but certainly not elite player), and a bucket of spare parts every year for eight friggin' years and the Texans have still consistently been very good in scoring and points except for Kubiak's first year (DAVID CARR) and this last year. Arian Foster emerged as a household name, but other than that, the skill position talent on that team has been, uh, unimpressive. Yet production for the
offensive unit has been good.
Is that talent or coaching? Because Ron Dayne, Kevin Walter, Steve Slaton, and the Eric Moulds retirement tour ain't exactly blue chip talent.
