I think one of the main issues is the relative absence of constraint plays on offense. You can't go back into shotgun repeatedly and run a very small percentage of runs and constraint plays from that formation. You become highly predictable, and defensive linemen and blitzers are able to pin their ears back. Couple that with a predictable rhythm and cadence, insufficient talent on the line, and a developing QB, and you give the defense a world of an advantage, thus causing league-leading sack numbers.
