Scrimmage Report: Defense shows up, Landry stands out

Touch football, means nothing. They're simply seeing what players do on any given down and try to get timing down. Pads on is when it matters.

Branden Albert agrees:

When training camp really starts that's when football starts," said Albert, a 2013 Pro Bowl selection who signed a five-year, $47 million contract to join the Dolphins this offseason. "[This] is football. You've got to do what you've got to do. But when training camp comes, the season comes, that's when real football begins."

Every year they say the defense outshines the offense and it's just because we aren't very good offensively

No Pads gives receivers and the Dline the advantage......lets see what happens when these guys can hit each other.....8 sacks smh....hope Brandon gets to know him better than RT does......

So excited for Landry. Cant wait to see how he performs in pads. Looks like Hazel has been making some plays too. Our slightly below average Olivier Vernon, seemed to be tearing it up today.

Yup, people should continue to think of Vernon as slightly below average, in fact I honestly hope that the Patriots and Belichick in the season opener think of Vernon as nothing much to worry about...this will allow me to enjoy the game more as I have my burger and beer at the sports bar.

3 Observations from day 3.

3. Rookie Wrap-Up: After seeing this year’s rookie class go through multiple practices and workouts, Dolphins fans should feel confident that several players from this class should make an immediate impact. Starting on the offensive side of the football, right tackle Ja’Wuan James not only looks the part, but has the athletic skill set to start the season against New England. His intelligence and eagerness to learn, so far matches his talent on the football field. It’s always tough to truly evaluate a position that relies upon contact, but James is off to encouraging start. Another offensive player that should look to have an immediate impact is wide receiver Jarvis Landry. Mike Wallace said of Landry “He reminds me of a third or fourth year receiver in the league right now”. From what I’ve witnessed, Wallace may just be right. His consistency of cleanly catching the football, and routinely adjusting his body makes Landry an easy target for a quarterback to hit.

On the defensive side, Walt Aikens may be behind the eight ball in regards to getting playing time immediately with the depth secondary, but his presence on special teams will be felt right away. His size at 6’1, 209lbs gives Aikens the ability to not only be a force in the tackling department, but his speed and range should allow him to challenge for one of the gunner spots on the punt coverage team. The other rookie that turned my head was seventh round pick Terrence Fede. While he still has a lot to learn coming from a small school like Marist, he’s got an NFL-ready skill set, possessing strength, edge speed, and a nose for the football.

I want to see what Landry does when the pads come on. Because from what I know, I think he will get even better. He is not a workout warrior or a shirt and shorts allstar.

Yikes, if Vernon is slightly below average I don't want to know what average and above average may mean...you know, considering he had 11.5 sacks last season, good for 7th in the league. More than J.J. Watt (10.5 sacks). Totally excited for Landry too. He keeps on showing up. I'm also excited for our second-year rookies (Taylor, Davis, Jordan, and Thomas).

The offensive line will naturally have some trouble with no pads on. We can't pass too much judgment until training camp gets going. If this trend continues, either we have an absolute force of nature D-line or we have some serious issues on the O-line. Things usually regress to the mean though, so I'm not putting too much, if any, emphasis on the going-ons of OTAs. It's all about learning the playbook and getting used to things before they get amped up at the next level of off-season training.

Chill, everyone, they're not even wearing pads. When TC stars, Albert will not be schooled by anyone. He's a vet and a pro, he'll be fine. This is good for the OL to go against these guys. We are going to have a great outside rush.

We cant have it both ways though. We cant say how good someone is based on play without pads but when they look bad go back to , well they were only in pads.
I still stand by Im not judging anybody in shorts to wards their football ability.
