Second Guessing Hickey?

great...3 starts in 4 years...and let go by the rams for pretty much peanuts...

Or I think we are mixing our guys up lol The other scrub we signed Shelly Smith 8 games started in 4 years and has played in 12 games.

fox will never even stay healthy or worse he will show just enough in camp that he will make the 53 and eat a spot and get hurt and be done by the bye week so i'm not even counting him

That's my biggest problem with signing. We count on him and he just does what he does best , get hurt

Geoff Schwartz didn't even play in 2011 or start in 2012 and was one of the best guards in the NFL last season.....I'm not saying Shelly Smith will have the same result, but can he at least play a snap before we write him off?

when guys are young and in their prime and have shown they can't stay healthy best thing you can do is walk away...we did it with fox and delmas who doesn't even practice during game weeks to rest his legs...

oh well cross your fingers...i just hope fox doesnt make the 53 cause if you are putting faith in that for 16 games you are bound to be let down

i'm not writing off shelley smith but the rams not matching that contract says to me for a guy in his prime they obviously weren't believers in his upside and future...that contract should not have deterred them

the finnegan contract yeah that was a deterrent with the guaranteed $6 million... one the rams if they believe he's lost a step should walk away from

Many lineman didn't receive the same offers from the respected teams...Veldheer is one of the best examples of that.....and that was from a team that had a **** ton of cash to spend...Smith also seems better suited for the ZBS and the Rams I believe ran a Power scheme (one of the reason Long went there)...

As far as the Finnegan contract.....can't be happy about that.....a lot of risk with a very unknown reward.

there's a massive difference though between veldheers contract and walking away and shelley smiths who was basically as a free agent in his prime 4 year pro at his highest earning potential and got paid like a depth free agent signee...

point is that contract is not something a team that believes in a guys future return that much would walk away from...but maybe the scheme fit was the main issue...i doubt it cause they kept saffold and he's tailor made for the zone scheme

Saffold also has LT potential and a crap ton of versatility...Smith is a Guard only...

I'm not arguing that Smith is the answer....I think he is a quality signing and a good value that should compete for a position. I also believe and can almost guarantee that a few more option will come available after the draft that will and should be brought in. Basically....the line is not done yet and we shouldn't view it as such...be happy that at least someone was signed....big step up from a year ago....when the team had the exact same holes and we thought they could be fixed by signing ****ty LBs...

Don't forget it's not his puppet Les Snead, but really Coach Mediocre (6 winning seasons out of 18+seasons) who's actually running the Rams. Deciding to ride with Bradford, letting Gibson and Jackson (and I guess Amendola) walk away with little or no effort to retain them should reflect more on that organization than on Shelley Smith's performance or potential that kept him on the sidelines.

that's the more likely scenario...not a scheme issue etc just that the rams if he does pan out got it wrong with shelley smith...that's the one i will hold out hope for...cause nothing else really makes sense given what he signed for here

The Rams dont even have enough cap space to sign their rookies (they have 2 first round picks), so matching even the paltry contract that Smith received from Miami would be very difficult. Smith has a chance to be a full time starter here, and lets not forget that our new OL coach was also his OL coach in Houston, and he has direct knowledge of Smith's ability. Bottom line: let the guy play before you call him a scrub.

bottom line is i didnt call him a scrub so dont put words in my mouth...and if the rams wanted to keep him with that level contract they could have...teams cut guys all the time to make room to keep guys they want to...and at that contract that would have been easy

as for has a chance to be a starter here god i hope so...it's not like there's much competition right now

My bad, you said the Rams "obviously weren't believers in his upside and future".....Yea thats not the same as thinking a player is a scrub

Teams dont cut players to make room for backup players. Smith was a backup in St Louis. And you dont pay your backups that kind of money anyway.

well at that contract they weren't...seems pretty obvious...
