Second Guessing Hickey?

My bad, you said the Rams "obviously weren't believers in his upside and future".....Yea thats not the same as thinking a player is a scrub

Teams dont cut players to make room for backup players. Smith was a backup in St Louis. And you dont pay your backups that kind of money anyway.

oh so they viewed him as a backup and wanted to pay him accordingly but we view him as a starter but paid him backup money pretty much as a free agent...thanks for clearing that one up

who seems more ass backwards with the thinking there miami or st louis???

well at that contract they weren't...seems pretty obvious...

Rams are going to have to release a few more players to sign their draft picks....I doubt a team in that situation would be willing to pay a backup OG $2mil/year. Anyways, lets just see how this guy plays before we turn him into this week's Finheaven whipping boy.

Yes thats exactly what happened. He was a backup on St Louis and a potential starter in Miami. Welcome to the NFL.

so why would he be viewed as a backup there but is here to be a starter and was paid as such??? can you explain that one to me since you brought it up...or is it just wishful thinking right now cause he wears our colors now and well we don't have many other options currently???

i get it...someone elses trash is our treasure...i guess that's as good as any answer you could give me

Yes, except for he's not necessarily the Rams' trash....they just cant afford to keep anyone. Pull up their cap numbers and see how ****ed they are this year. Even if he was the Ram's trash, you should know that it happens all the time in the NFL, especially with OL players. They are backups on one team and become successful starters on another. He going from a power to a zone scheme, and will be playing for a coach he is already familiar with. I think he has a decent chance here.

I was overly anxious to fix most of the OL in the first few days of FA. I was told by some to be patient. Well, after seeing the end result of what we ended up with on the OL, and FA overall. I have to second guess what Hickey has done. I also have to believe that IF Ireland had done the same, more would be doing the same. A closer look.

OL- We overpaid Albert at $9M a year, and got Smith for $2.8M a year. IMO, we could have had Collins for $6M and Asamoah for 5M, and still had Smith. So, we could have filled 3 spots for $2M more. I would have preferred that.

CB- We got a good deal on Grimes but overpaid Finnegen at $5.5M a year. We could have had Verner, who I targeted to replace Grimes (almost as good last year), for $5M in place of Finnegen.

S- We got Delmas for $3.5M, and could have kept Clemons for less than half that.

RB- We got Moreno for $3M, and Blount went for $1.9. Debatable.

DT- We got Starks for $6M, and Mitchell for $4M. DT is very deep and talented in this draft. We could have signed one, and drafted another, saving a few Mil. Debatable.

Overall, I'm not overly impressed with what Hickey has done to this point but, we shall see.

When you're the Miami Dolphins, it's gonna be hard to land a "five star" guy until they prove that things have changed.

that's fair...but you will never convince me that even with their cap issues if they liked the player enough to believe in his long term future as a competent starter they would not have matched that offer...there's ways that could have been done

and maybe you are right they got it wrong...bout all i can hope for...although that someone elses trash is our treasure could be the fight song for our free agent period under hickey with smith, fox, delmas, finnegan at least

A team desperate for oline that played washed up Dahl over him could have kept him instead of signing Britt. Now maybe the Rams were wrong on him and we know something else the rest of the NFL doesn't or hell he develops.
Being a backup on a line that featured some poor guard play and knowing they were not keeping Saffold makes u wonder if they really liked Smith that much anyway. We had cap room that we wasted on finnagan and Delmas that we could have used to fix oline.

Paul Boudreau is a solid line coach and couldn't develop him maybe our guy can but I think he will always be a liability in pass blocking.

How is Delmas a waste...he's an upgrade over Clemons....

Maybe he is but we are missing 3 starter level players on oline and we just trade out safeties that's why its a waste.
I also think With Delmas and Jones we lose something in coverage as safeties

What makes you think we didnt contact other linemen, and they simply denied us? Perhaps Albert was the only top LT willing to talk to us? People forget that not every player wants to come down here after what happened last year. This isnt madden, we cant sign all the best FAs for cheap. I think he did great, and the only signing i dont love is Finnegan, but we have to see how that plays out.

Draft, signing after the draft....camp cuts...all viable options for the line....not to mention Brenner, Garner, and Shelby for one of those positions....best man wins...

We had money and fixing the line was more important than possibly upgrading safety.
Our line was one of the worst last year. Brenner, GArner, Shelly yea not great options.

How is Delmas a waste...he's an upgrade over Clemons....

all i know is delmas is out of position a lot...seems to me that when he does get beat he gets housed...primarily cause he gets too nosy and out of position...although not being able to practice during the week probably plays into it

i would not though come out and say that's an auto upgrade at the safety position
