See Harbaugh lock room speech?

If anyone thinks this type of fire and passion doesn't make a difference, I'm sorry for you. This is the type of fire and determination I played and coached with. It is VERY contagious. It really makes a significant difference.
I think it can be contagious if there is a sufficient leadership structure among the players, and those leaders are of the same ilk (i.e., Ray Lewis paired with Vince Lombardi). If there isn't sufficient leadership among the players, or the leaders among the players aren't of that ilk, there will be no such "contagion" in my opinion. There won't be any "bridge" between the coach's personality and the infusion of that personality into the roster. Whatever the coach is doing will ring hollow, because it won't be transmitted to the roster via the player leaders with whom it resonates.

In other words, there need to be a whole lot more variables in place for "passion and fire" to have the sort of effect people think it does intuitively.

To be fair, the big complaint I have with Philbin is not that he 'doesn't motivate,' but that he's openly admitted he doesn't see a reason to try to push his players' buttons or motivate them. He's actually said that. And while that's fine, I understand the idea that 'these guys are pros, why should I have to do this crap?' I honestly think the head coach does need to push some buttons.

Of those guys you mentioned, I think it's funny that you bring up Bill Walsh. Bill Walsh was a pretty low key guy, but he was an excellent speaker and could command a room. He also LOVED to play mind games with his players and would frequently try to foster an 'us against the world' mentality, even if he had to really reach to do it.

You fell for some coach speak after a "gotcha" question?

Reporter: Hey coach, do your players lack motivation (suck)?
Philbin: ...

Perhaps.

However, I look at it like the coach is the Captain of the ship. It starts at the top. If the captain has no passion and instead is Mr. Roboto + (at best) golf clap, the odds of anyone being fired up on game day just got a little longer. You'd need even more rah rah type players to make up for the deficiency and unfortunately, those type of players aren't what they are looking for. They want Mr. Roboto Jr.'s.

I am sorry, but when you've got a guy like say Pat Riley at the top, even on days when you don't want to work out, guys like that can motivate you to get your butt in gear.

I agree a coaches job is to push a player 100 % and all coaches get excited after wins but it's the preparation and the game time adjustments that are way more important.

Ever watch the game winning speech some of the players faces in the pro's ?Half or more than half of them aren't into it.The game is over they are happy and relieved they won. It's probably the outcome one would get doing a survey as to which you would like the walk softly carry a big stick or the loud rah rah coach. Prolly 50/50

How then do you make sense of Bill Belichick's achievement of a dynasty?

Yup! Exactly. And there's my problem with Philbin. I don't think his staff does a good job of gameplanning consistently or making adjustments.

And I always feel compelled to point this out, but the biggest problem this team has right now is talent. That doesn't mean the coaching is great, but the OL is dog**** and that isn't a coaching problem.

Also :sidelol: at the idea that Bill Belichick doesn't push the hell out of his players' buttons seven days a week. He is the master at that.

I just saw the post-game speech as my DVR caught up. I'd rather have this here below than what the 49ers had in that clip. Notice how Cowher's message is short and sweet, and he then makes way for the player leaders, who are of his personality ilk, to provide the emotion and inspiration:

I'd like to see a Belichick post game speech, does one exist?

Here's another thing that bothers me with Philbin,I heard that they use to play years back Dolphin footage in the practice facility, and Joe put a squash to it.It may be petty but I really didn't like to hear that of Philbin.
