Shelley Smith Leaves N.E. w/o deal

9. Shelley Smith

2013 Grade: +7.0
2013 Snaps: 371

Summary: I mentioned earlier that Shelley Smith, who is only 26 and heading into his fifth year, is one of the most intriguing players on this list. I’ve written here before that you rarely, if at all, see average or below average players put up extraordinary stretches or have dominant single games. This is especially true on the lines. When you see something like that it’s usually a signal of more things to come. In Smith’s 371 snaps this season he put up a run blocking grade of +12.3. He had the fifth-highest percentage of run snaps grade positively among all guards. Those kinds of numbers are too impressive to just be a fluke. The Rams’ guard plays with great leverage at 6-foot-3 and was a terror pulling all year. The only problem is in Smith’s 731 career snaps he has a pass blocking grade of -10.1. A lot of teams aren’t willing to sacrifice that much pass protection for a good run blocker and Smith could have a tough time winning a starting job wherever he goes.

He was No. 3 on PFF's list of FA bargains

Shelley Smith, OG
2013 Grade: +7.0
Summary: After barely playing in his first two seasons in the league, Smith has played 731 in the past two years for the St. Louis Rams, not getting the chance to start full time, but coming onto the field as an injury replacement. 2013 was our best look at him to date and, while you do have concerns about his pass blocking, where he graded below -2.0 in each of his two starts, he is a very good run blocker. So good in fact, that just three guards had a run blocking grade higher than Smith’s +12.3 last season.
Good Fit: Kansas City, New England, Miami

They also have James Starks on the list, who I think would make a lot of sense for us.

Smith and Garner will be our starting guards, Brenner and Thomas will be depth, as well as the draft; we will probably sign another tackle.

Dont see that happening. Garner and Brenner will be backup guards and Thomas was coached all last year as backup LT. I see stating guards being Smith if he gets signed and a draftpick out of the first three rounds.

Garner will never be a starter apart from anything else he has proven he cant stay healthy when starting

On way to Miami for a visit --- as per Andrew Abramson on Twitter-- What do you guys think?

Shelly Smith IMHO has outstanding potential and upside. He plays both LG and RG and is one of the best run blocking G's in the league (however he MUST improve on his pass blocking). Bottom-line the Phinz NEED to sign him ASAP. The Phinz NEED Shelly Smith period....sign the Man today please :-)

So....

LT - Albert
LG - B. Thomas (3rd Round)
C - Pouncey
RG - S. Smith
RT - Z. Martin (1st Round)

Garner/Brenner/Thomas at the bench.

O-line depth makes me nervous. Garner only one that can play the OT. Maybe bring back McKinnie

Smith apparently fits better at LG. We're not touching OL in the 1st, maybe 2nd and I'd rather Ja'Wuan James at RT.

Agreed at LG but starting rookie RG and RT makes me nervous.

If Z. Martin is available at 19 we will be taking him. (I see Steelers possible taking him before us thought since Matthews, Lewan and Robinson will be gone early)

Zach Martin is a real likely candidate in round 1

Heck I am not sure Martin will be there ate #19. I mentioned in the VIP about bringing McKinnie back at RT as well. I think he would like to stay in Miami and he may realize it's his last gig.
