Shelley Smith Leaves N.E. w/o deal

If it comes down to us an NE lets say and they clear(have) enough cap space...not sure what pitch we can give him to sign here.

I can't believe Smith would break the bank. Worst case they sign him and draft someone that beats him out. Heck they paid Garner $1.2m last year, scheduled to make $1.7m this year and $1.8m next year and he can't even stay healthy for a full year.

We could go with a Wharthen, who had a fabulous year, but is 32 (I think). I am questioning what Hickey has done on the OL, our biggest need, so far.

Sorry, but didn't want to read all 12 pages so a question: Why did Smith leave without a contract in New England? If he's not demanding too much money then why would the Pats not try to ink him? Last I checked, they like good football players. :)

I hope you're right but, we painted ourselves in a corner at OG, and other teams have expressed interest while having him in for visits. I only saw him play one game, and is everything I want on the run, and not what I want in pass pro.

We've hardly painted ourselves in a corner (that can't possibly be an expression...), maybe pinned..anyway. This was an extremely weak guard market with little depth..Beadles got overpaid, I think we offered him $5m which was fair market price but $6 was ridiculous. Asamoah got at or above his market value, there's other guys competing for the top 2 guards on the market for the zone. Since we run the scheme that we do we're limited a little bit...next I would've looked at Rinehart but he obviously wanted to stay with the Chargers and was locked up quickly. As far as long term ability Smith is my favorite guy after those guys and he was a little off my radar because I thought he was an RFA. Schwartz isn't really a fit at guard in the zone, neither is Wharton.

Because there's another 31 teams in the league...they also have two veteran guards so Smith likely can't be offered a starting gig like with us. They just spent $32m on Revis so they don't have a lot of cap room. There's plenty of reasons.

Let me take him out on Saint Patrick's Day on South Beach, and I guarantee a signing for the minimum. JK/LOL

1. We have more money.
2. We can offer a starting job.
3. We have your old O-line coach.
4. You can live in South Beach and not Pawtucket or whatever **** hole.
5. We have more money.

NE doesnt get into bidding wars. Don't know why everyone is so worried about them outbidding us.

Bellichek writes a number on a napkin, wipes his ass with it, and throws it at the agent, and walks away. Take it or leave it.

Ain't that the truth. And IMHO I think it is wearing thin with some of the vets. They always lowball their own.

If memory serves, you did not like Oher either when we talked about him a few months ago. What changed your mind?

i can't recall ever saying that...and i liked oher as a prospect...so there's a soft spot for me with him admittedly...he's first round physical talent all day long...and if he does pan out not someone in 2 years we got to replace...i'm trying to look for the long term...get away from stop gaps and older players

Oher was terrible last year, but he was playing with a bad ankle to be fair.

Stupid expression...

Even more stupid when you do it, which we have done. JMO

I enjoy classic comedy, and the old comedians solution was to cut out a new door. Wonder if Hickey is thinking the same in perhaps a trade.
