Should C Gates be our new number 2 WR?

IMO, Gates is definately gonna see some plays this year, but he's not ahead of Hartline.

of course gates is gonna see plenty of snaps...he'll be in the 4 wr sets and probably on occasion take hartlines place in some 3 wide sets etc...you want to get that guy on the field cause it will open up things underneath by keeping the safeties deep to account for his speed...if for nothing else as a decoy to get your underneath guys bess and marshall and fasano good looks...you take gates off the field and i can promise you the opposition will be playing much tighter and squatting on stuff underneath...not to mention his speed should help the running game in single back sets etc

your gonna see a lot of guys bailing when that speeds on the field...

i'll say no because from what i have seen, speed receivers are way more effective in the slot, secondly we can put clyde in on 3rd downs for hartline if we wanna go deep wit him at #2. Theres just no need to put him at #2 when we have hartline who is pretty damn good himself.

Will he end up being #2 I doubt it, our staff loves Hartline. His speed is something else, I just hope that Henne and Gates can continue to work on there timing so he isn't being over thrown all the time.
They love two things of Brian Hartline: his speed and his motor.
Even when he's the most gifted guy, he has always worked to beat any challenger, no matter the name.
Hartline offer a rare mix of decent hands to catch, thunder speed and his size is fine to beat most defensive backs.
That said Brian won't be named WR1 over Brandon and his routes and catching skills are a line under Davone's.
Surely Gates can win any speed race over anybody on this roster, but as today, he doesn't know the entire playbook, can't follow some routes and his catching technique needs a lot of work. A diamond in the rough, but what a diamond.

Quick receivers are best in the slot (Bess, Welker). Guys with speed like Gates I like to see line up on the outside.

first time i've ever heard anyone pimp brian hartline for "his motor"...

Don't forget how many times the coaching staff has said that hartline is the smartest wr on the field, he knows every wr position so he knows every route that the other receivers are running, he has an advantage on every single player out there except the qb, you cant teach that, the guy is smart and thats what make him the player he is, imo.

Personally, I think Roberto Wallace eventually goes into the #2 spot. Miami can do much better than Hartline at the number 2, but it may take some time before those options emerge.

with time, Gates may be that. right now, he's a big threat on go routes, WR screens and maybe reverses/end-arounds IMO. he's going to have to polish his route running to become a legit #2 though.

On the bright side, if Henne doesn't work out, our first round pick next year will have his blind side protected, and a great set of receivers to throw to, its an ideal situation for a rookie QB.

Speaking of potential rookie QB's, anybody else watch Ryan Tannehill last night?

He made one good catch. He's going to have to show me more. He looks like he needs to get stronger. It doesn't look like he could take many hits in the middle.

He has 5 catches and a touchdown. One of only 5 touchdowns we threw for this preseason. His deep threat also opened up the field for others to get open and make catches.

If Hartline can just start holding onto the ball in clutch situations he'll be a phenomenal #2. For some WR's (Derek Hagan, anyone?) turning that corner is all but impossible. Let's hope Hartline can make that jump this season. If he does, I have no worries about our receiving corps whatsoever.

hartline possibly a phenomenal #2 wr??? in my best keyshawn voice "come on man"

I think that is why this works. B Hartline is the only WR we have who can play every WR position. This is not a demotion for him.

C Gates is only learning one position, split end.

I'm aware that it's a big "if" considering how many drops/fumbles/botched handoffs (that reverse against Chicago comes to mind) he's had. But if you look at his entire body of work I think you'll see a versatile WR that can get open in a position where he can present a target to the QB fairly consistently on all points of the field. Even when he rounds off his routes (another nasty habit he needs to break, though not as bad as the first one IMHO) he finds a way to get open and his quickness and straightline speed make him difficult to cover 1-on-1. So yeah. I'm not sure what else you could ask for from a #2 WR. So yeah he could be (and I strongly emphasize COULD BE) a phenomenal #2.
