Should Philbin have stood by Sherman?

Philbin must have known even last year that Sherman should have been fired but out of loyalty didn't do it and should have.

Fact is that Ross should have just fired them all. Just firing Sherman and not Philbin and Ireland too only creates more potential for drama and continued dysfunction in the organization.

Just more horrible ownership from Ross. Make Sherman the scapegoat so he can claim they made some kind of change but Dolphin fans are not as stupid as he thinks they are.
Yes Sherman was not good. Coyle has not been good and our defense has regresses under his coaching. Our oline was among the worst in the NFL but somehow Turner has a job

Mike Munchak was asked by ownership to fire a large part of his coaching staff, Philbin was asked to fire one assistant coach. Hardly the same situation.

Sure there will probably be more coaching changes for the Dolphins staff, but that is because the new offensive coordinator might want some different people as the position coaches.

Offensive playcalling was a big problem this past season and Sherman has been in the crosshairs of the fans and media all season. Everyone wanted Sherman removed and most expcted it. There is no reason why Philbin should be criticised for firing him and there is no reason why Philbin should have backed him to the point he would get fired himself. Let's not act like Philbin did something that hasn't happened thousands of times in NFL history and will continue to happen.

The only reason why Philbin was reluctant to fire him is because the two have a long history together and are great friends. While everyone speculates on every little report/rumor, let me throw this out there. Perhaps the reluctantancy to fire Sherman was an act by Philbin to retain his friendship. If Philbin fired Sherman the day after the season the two probably never talk again. Now that Philbin "put up a fight" for Sherman, they can remain friends but Philbin can still get a new offensive coordinator. Win win for Philbin.

It was ridiculous to ever think that Philbin would not fire Sherman if Ross asked him to. That was silly.

Having said that, I wish Ross had fired them both.

Who's decision was it to go with Martin as your LT instead of having Ireland draft one or hire one?
Who's decision was it to make no effort to retain your top RB?
Who's decision was it to bring in a top WR who isn't a great fit for your inexperienced, inaccurate QB?
Who's decision was it to change the offensive roster so that it's geared toward the pass and away from the run?

These are final decisions made by the HC, not the coordinator. Not Mike Sherman. In the end, it's the head coach who MOST molds the team, not the offensive coordinator. Yes, you need a great OC to be a championship team and Mike Sherman is not that guy. So I do think we benefit from getting rid of him. Especially if the new guy is good at working with QB's, which we desperately need right now. But let's face it, this is Joe Philbin's team.

Bought himself an extra year at the expense of his long time mentor and friend. He should have stood with Sherman when the chip were down because he sure stood by him all damn season while the O was stinking up the place. Hypocrite.

Like I said if he felt like he should be fired fire him but if he was forced to fire him then he was without balls. All this is easy to say for me because I don't make a million dollars a year. Maybe I would snip them for Ross to for that money. If Philben didn't make the decision and was forced though, why the hell is he our damn coach. Oh yea because Ross is the owner

Why even have a GM than? If they are simple "yes" men that do the bidding of the HC, just hire a few lawyers to negotiate contracts. I can't say with certainty, but I am convinced that Wallace was Irelands baby. In fact all the issues you bring up seem to be something that falls squarely on the GM's shoulders.

We never had an elite run defense before Coyle. Yes we were ranked 3rd back in 2011. But our pass defense was terrible under Nolan (25th). Those are false stats if you don't have balance.
Team threw at us because it was the easiest way to move the ball against us. Not because we had elite run D they were scared of. Also back in 2011 we were the 6th in rushing attempts on offense. That has a huge impact on the number of defensive snaps you must face. Now we don't run that ball anymore and face 5 more defensive snaps per game compared to 2011.

For myself points allowed on defense is the most important Defensive stat. We were 6th in 2011, 7th in 2012 and 8th in 2013. That is good enough to win.
The next important stat is overall defensive yards, We were 15th under Nolan in 2011 and 21st in both 2012 and 2013 under Coyle. Not a huge change there.
And the fact that we rank higher in points allow than yards allowed shows that our defense is doing it job (bend but don't break)
Expecting us to have a shutdown defense when the offense is ranked consistently in the bottom of the league is just foolish IMO.

So since Turner is still OLine coach is he doing a good job.
IS Coyle doing a good job.

You can spin stats however you want but not giving up many yards rushing is a sign of a good run defense. Its not like teams never ran on us. We stopped the run better before Coyle you could see that with your own two eyes. Ellerbee and Wheeler are weak against the run its easy to see if you watch the games. Dansby was very good against the run. People believe what they want to believe. You can believe that our linebackers are just as good against the run but that's not reality. Some of what you say is true but points or yards are not the end all when it comes to grading a defense. If a defense is ranked 30th in yards and 12 in scoring they are still not a good defense. These types of so called bend but don't break defenses are just exploits waiting to happen and rarely get the job done when its crunch time.
