Should Philbin have stood by Sherman?

Exactly. I don't understand how this whole process is getting over thought.

ITS BUSINESS. It's about results. Either you deliver of get fired.

Every coach knows the deal.

The reason it is being overthought is so many people want to bash Philbin for something. He has given enough reason to get bashed, but the whole Sherman thing is stupid

joe did the right thing, he tried standing by sherman and it was going no where. & honestly im glad to see sherman go there was no point in keeping him around anyways, with sherman gone so does his "go go" count leave with him. Good riddance :hclap:

I don't think the players really care about how Philbin fired Sherman or if they think he should have stuck up for him. The rumblings were that the players were unhappy with Sherman's play calling and wanted change. Philbin could have whipped Sherman in public and I don't think the players would really care as long as he is gone.

Fans wanted Sherman gone, the media thought Sherman should leave and players apparently wanted Sherman gone. There is no reason why Philbin should be criticised for doing exactly what mostly everyone wanted. The NFL is a cut-throat business where people get fired all the time and not always in the best ways. The Patriots during the offseason cut a player because he was diagnosed with diabetes.

Yup. I don't think any of the players are upset with Sherman being gone. The players have been bashing Sherman publicly and privately since like... week one.

Joe Philbin comes across as an extremely high character guy. I think that firing his Offensive Coordinator, mentor and buddy must have been difficult. However, it was good that he personally took responsibility and did it. Even blind Freddy's dog could see that the play calling was way too predictable and lacked creativity. It is important in Tannehill's development and if both of them are honest, they know it as well.
By firing Sherman, this is actually a significant step in his growth as a Head Coach. The ability to make the tough coaching personnel decisions. It will be interesting if Jim Turner and Zac Taylor also get their marching orders. I would assume that Campbell (TE coach) stays because he did a pretty good job in developing Clay.

Zac Taylor and Jim Turner are likely to be unemployed in the league if they get fired. They had no NFL experience. Turner is tainted by Bullygate plus the fact that the OL has been awful under his tenure. Taylor is a nobody.

Also, I hate to say this, and it's disturbing to me that I'm saying it, but Ross was right. Sherman needed to go. Players were basically in open revolt and even Jeff ****ing Darlington has pointed out that EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE knew when we were going to snap the ball and what kind of play it was going to be. Gruden pointed it out on MNF. The Bills laughed about it. That's on Mike Sherman. And Joe Philbin.

If Taylor and Turner can't get a job after this then maybe they are not qualified to be coaching now.....If I am the owner and I look at the issues this team had over the past yr and the main one was the OC and the HC wants to keep him then I either allow him because maybe I am wrong or I **** can all of them because the HC doesn't know what the problem is..... now you are holding Philbin accountable for a staff he didn't pick....basically Ross is saying you are going to be fired next and the only reason why it isn't today is I don't want to pay you two yrs while working for someone else....in other words he is puppet for a yr, if it works he continues if not, he's gone.....

The owner is a clueless moron in matters of football.

Case in point: Jeff Ireland remains employed as the General Manager of the Miami Dolphins.

Ross changing the rules is no big deal. Circumstances change if things aren't working. Like getting fired.

I disagree, changing the rules that directly affects how you do the job he will be evaluating you on is a huge deal....that's like saying I will evaluate you on how you build my house and then before you can finish the house I change the tools that you use to build the house, but I will still evaluate your performance based on the original terms....hopefully the new OC will be better but that's not a guarantee

Philbin's job is to do what's good for the team, not for the good of his mentor. The Dolphins were 27th in offense this year, and it was a hard-facts reason that they lost games in a season that should have been a playoffs-or-bust goal, especially with the money invested in the players.

Mentor, Buddy, Friend, whatever you want to throw at it: Philbin did his job by firing a weak link. I approve.

I suspect Sherman made it easy on Joe's conscience, he obviously knew it was coming - Sherman's been a HC in both the NFL and college so he knows the deal and probably had to make similar decisions in the past. I doubt Sherman would've wanted Joe to get fired alongside him.

You don't keep the balance of your contract if you resign as a coach in the NFL.

You do if you get fired unless the owner can show cause other than perceived job performance.

I agree with that. At this point in Sherman's career he could get another gig on another staff or simply retire. I am not one to rip anyone for making money, but I still wonder...

I don't think Philbin should have stood by Sherman, I think this should have been asserted sooner. I've been hypercritical of Philbin, but I must admit I am intrigued by what can take place without Sherman here. None of that will fix Kevin Coyle's defense constantly failing when they can either get off the field or seal a win.
